Good question. Once the final assembly is finished then the whole thing can be painted. A little surface rust can be cleaned off and prepped for paint. Not a big deal. A bigger problem is getting all the oil off it so the paint will stick. Lots of grease/wax remover. I'm still deciding on the color to paint the motor. jrw429 (2/18/2014) Not meaning to hijack the thread, but I see that the block and heads have surface rust. Yes, newbie question. Why leave it like that? At what point should the block be painted? Should the surface rust be removed first, and how?

The motor is at Tims, he's assembling it there. The 56 is at my place. Soon they will meet.

Nice progress Lance. I'm going to have to get over there to watch the build.
