The car that YA posted is running a blown 312 and the trans is a 6 speed Richmond if I remember correctly. The car was built by a friend of mine here in Al for a guy in PA. The car is a work of art!

I finally had an adapter made for the lower pulley. I used a lightweight McCulloch pulley for the basic shape. It bolts up using the crank center bolt and the two auxilliary pulley bolts. So I am progressing on my 4-71 setup. One thing I hadn't given much thought to was the hood. I see the scoop poking through, did the carb come up that high too? My hood is louvered and I really don't want to cut a hole in it. Kind of hoping to find a cheap 55 hood or even better a fiberglass one. Chuck

I understand the flat white hi temp for the headers but we did have chrome back then. Your car is definitely a high end build (for the late 50's early 60's) so chrome would not be out of place. Just my thoughts. Love what you are doing with it! Chuck

In days gone by, we soaked my son's 1/4 Midget tires in WD-40, worked ok, took a few laps to get the bite back. I never tried it on larger tires. On a drag car there is nothing like new slicks, always went faster on a fresh set. You could probably sell the factory blockoffs to help buy the tires!

A comment from memory on those Jahn's pistons. If I recall, a buddy used those pistons in his engine many years ago. Looking at them with the heads off later, we got the impression that there seemed to be a problem with what I'll call uneven flame spread. If I recall the upper edge of the domes line up close to the ground of the spark plugs.. I've noted that in one or two photo articles here & in Y-Blk magazine, some later pistons used in our favorite engine have a groove in the dome or the dome is layed back some.. Any Comments?

Regarding the T10 in a car bell, the input bearing retainer needs to be turned down a little on the OD to fit in the bell opening and the input shaft needs to have approximately 3/8" cut off the nose of it. Some T10's have dual bolt pattern but if not you may have to drill 2 of the holes to match the bolt pattern.

I'm not knowledgeable about differences between passenger car and truck y-block bellhousings, Lance. Regarding using a T-10 with a y-block passenger car bellhousing, like other Borg Warner transmissions that were used across vehicle makes, the bell housing bolt pattern can be an issue OR the transmission input shaft length.
IF the T-10 is from a ‘60s Ford application I don’t THINK that you’ll have a problem. That said, be sure to check the transmission input shaft length. I’ve seen numerous T-85s and T-10s for sale where a transmission case ‘ear’ has been broken off. The input shaft likely bottomed in the end of the crank and the installer didn’t realize and just kept tightening the transmission case to bellhousing bolts.
Others will add to this for you.

I picked up this car about a year ago a few blocks from my house (Modesto Ca.). I had seen it on Craigs list. It was pretty straight, no engine, trans, windshield or bumpers, oh and no papers. I made him an offer but he wasn't as negotiable as I needed him to be. After texting back and forth over a couple of months he gave me one of those bring me the money today kind of offers, I couldn't pass it up.
There were already projects at home so I really didn't want to look at it so it was hauled out to the parents house. Out of mind, out of site. It worked okay til mid summer. My son was turning 16 and I thought this would be a great father son build. That lasted a very short time, he's just not into 50's cars.
I had no interest in selling it and thought about different ways it could be done. During this time I had blown the engine in my '57 Ford wagon. The original 292 gave up the ghost. This lead me down a very interesting road which allowed me to cross paths with Charlie Burns and Tim McMaster. Charlie had an engine that Tim had built and he was looking for some cash to throw at his land speed car. This was perfect for me as you know, Y-Blocks are a little harder to come by than say, well just about everything. The wagon is now back on the road THANK GOD after three months off the road and is much peppier than the stocker it had in it.
Back to the '56, it was originally a Y-Block V8/auto car. So, maybe put a Y back in it?? I had a few other engine choices, a 460 and also a blown small block scruby, but after talking to TIM McMASTER the Y just seemed right =). There are still many things to sort out but the main goal is in place. Build a gasser the way it would have been built back in the day. Not a huge thumper motor but a small, high winding Y.
The car will get an upgrade to a four speed, an early top loader. I'm still looking for one of those. Nothing has been touched on it since I drug it home, but that will be changing very soon. The rear diff will bean early Mopar 8.75 that had been set up as a three link, has Moser axles a spool and 4.11s which may be swapped out for set of 4.56s. That old three link stuff will be cut away as we lay plans for the ladder bars. There is a chance this could be replaced with a 9" if one avails itself, which would make it a truly 100% Ford Build.
Covering the Eagle Field Drag racing events over the years sparked the initial idea to build an 8th mile drag car. Shooting for the first event for 2015.
Motor will be a 272 block, with some HD rods I found on here. More to come.
Donor car is a 56 Customline thats in pretty decent shape. I'll be selling off a bunch of stuff I wont be using if anyone is interested. The 8" will be going and also the seats, windows and more.
This will be used for parts, this was the 292 out of my 57 Wagon.
This is the current rear I have, Moser axles, spool, 4.11s all new parts. If I find a 9" this will be for sale as well.
Sorry for the bad photo, was dark at the machine shop and no flash. This is the block. Vintage 272 ECG casting .125 overbore.
Here are the HD rods fresh from the hot tank. These will work great on our little buzz motor.
Just check my rockers and they are the high ratio type, which is great. Less parts chasing to do.
Thats about it for now. Stay tuned.

I am working a deal on some heads now and hope it all fall in line. Just waiting to see if they are posted heads or not. Hoping to confirm this weekend. I did get some parts ordered, stud kit for the main and heads, timing set and push rods. Should also get info on a four speed thats local that may work as well. He's supposed to be getting that checked.
Still looking for a bell housing and a "B" intake. But I may contact one of my fellow fabricators and have them built me an intake. We'll see how that works out.
This weekend we will be pulling some of the front end apart and getting measurements for the straight axle so I'll have a few pics to post up. If anyone is looking for 56 Ford parts, drop me a line, there will be a lot of stuff coming off the car that won't be used.

Finally got the car back into the garage, after getting the truck out and on the road. The 62 is running very well and I'm happy to be driving it after all the time spent on the build. Just need to finish up the paint and it will be done. Later upgrades will be to the brakes, add AC and possibly a 5 speed as well. Time and $$ to dictate that. Also looking for a clean grill for the 62 if anyone has any leads. First order of business is getting the rusty floors fixed. I have panels from Classic to Current Fabrication I am installing. MAJOR UPDATE:From Justin at JG Fabrication & Design on the Monster build. So here's a finished install of our shackles. Then a reference picture of rounding our tube overlays on the motor plate. We used heat, then the persuader aka a hammer, rolling them over the tube, tack l, weld, repeat. Once cooled we installed bushings in the motor mount then bolted up our tabs. Our tabs helped center the motor in the chassis, then just had to position it front to rear and centered our rear tail shaft verifying the motor square and level in the chassis.
|
By Lancer - 9 Years Ago
|
Larry, if you go to the beginning of this thread you can read all about the motor. Tim McMaster is building it. The rods did change to Mummert rods from what was posted back then. 12:1 motor will be fun. The engine is only as far as whats listed. I'll be posting up the final assembly images pretty soon. He's going to get back on it. Its been on pause for a while while I sorted out a bunch of things. Nothing to do with Tim. Tim's also building an engine for my '62 Slick I just picked up. See the thread in the regular car/truck section for that info.

Doug and Glen, no problem with clearances. I've heard that a few times. The design mimics the truck mount and is actually a little larger than it needs to be.
Larry, those are just off the shelf Speedway truck headers. We will be making a few tweaks to them though. Lengthening the collectors by 3 inches or so and possibly raising them up right after they come out of the head. That part is more for looks than anything. Was Justin's idea. His shop is doing all the work on it.

Update from JG Design & Fabrication on the Monster build.
"After laying our spring fixed position, cycling the suspension, and determining our shackle mounts while giving us 45* degree shackle mount. We used a hole saw to drill the frame at 1.5" hole, then cleaned the holes up to make sure they were straight and level side to side. To verify our side to side trueness we run our bushing sleeves in the frame with a 1.25 OD tube through the frame / sleeves. Once leveled and squared, we tacked each side inside and out, then welded it out. We then ground our welds out, installed bushings after greasing with wheel bearing grease. Then a simple shackle install and there we have it."

UPDATE ON THE BUILD: Motor mount plate in progress. JG Design & Fab is doing a great job on this. The motor plate design ties back into the overlay plates on the frame posted above. Right now the headers are HTC coated which has a newer look to them. I may have to add more tubing to the flange area to get them to exit where I want so they would be mis matched colors if that happens. Chrome would be very cool but out of my budget. We have a powder coated donating his talents to will probably get the high temp white treatment when all said and done.

Super excited to announce MSD Performance as our newest sponsor forThe Canned Monster gasser build. They gave us the whole ignition system, MSD 6AL box, Y-Block Billet distributor, black plug wires and a performance coil. Even threw in a black cap so it looks more period correct. MSD Performance

Disc brake kit has arrived. The front springs on on the way from Eaton Detroit Spring. Disc kit came from Speedway. I'm using original '51 Chevy spindles on the axle so I am having to have some machine work done in order for the bearings to fit properly. A local shop is working on them now. Once the spacer is welded in place I can assemble the brakes on the axle and then install the new wheels and tires. Can't wait to see it all together. The local rod shop I'm hoping will start on cutting off the frame rails next week. I'm out of town next week heading up to Boise Idaho, anyone here from the Boise area?

Front springs just arrived from Eaton Detroit Spring Co. Very nice and made in the USA. Great company to deal with BTW.

Finally got the spindles back from the machine shop. They had to machine them down to fit the disc brakes. Now I can finally bolt it all together.

So, our pal Bill Carlson, owner of WAC Customs and official sponsor of our Canned Monster just informed me that he is upgrading our axle, the one he just finished! All I can say is wow. We will now have a I-Beamed-Tube axle. Bigger and stronger, just in case those front wheels decide they want to come up.
Still can't add photos. Not sure why. Hopefully that gets resolved.

Looking at a T10 later today I hope, or the next couple of days. It think it will work with the Y bell housing. Going to pull the cover and check the guts, make sure all looks good.

Hard to get a good pic right now but the axle arrived from CT last night. Bill Carlson of WAC Customs did an amazing job on it. Guys if you want an axle custom made, give him a call instead of buying that Speedway stuff made outside the US. http://waccustoms.com/ Support you local business men and women.

Been busy, did some sanding on the "Canned Monster" last night, going to be a busy weekend doing more of that.
In the last two days I've had two companies contact me interested in sponsoring the Monster. Working out those details now and hope to officially announce them soon. One for the springs, the other for tires so I'm really excited about that.

Some very good progress sanding today on the Monster. Pass door and quarter are done and about half the trunk. Discovered some good rust holes in the rocker area. Some nice body shop in the past had filled them with Bondo. But, I'm still thrilled with the progress. I've been waiting a couple of years to start this part of the project.
Bummed it still wont let me add any photos for some reason.

Go here for our build. I still can't add any photos. Frustrated. Whoever maintains this site needs to resolve the issues. Everything worked fine til it was upgraded I guess from what I understand. You may need to see if there is a patch for whats wrong. Also the site is running extremely slow for me now.

So, back to the wheel sizing, I'm going to go with 15x8.5 for the rear size. The car is headed to a local shop this week where they will get the wheel wells cut and the mock up wheels in place to do some measuring so we have an idea for back space. The mopar rear is slightly wider than the 8" coming out.

still having a lot of issues posting pics so I'll just comment for now.
My son swapped the diffs on the 56 over the weekend and then had to put the 8" backs since the ubolts wouldn't go around the mopar tubes.
Oh well, the car will be heading to the local hot rod shop, Modesto Rod & Custom in a couple of days so they can start on the suspension.
Got the gas tank pulled (anyone looking for one) and some other parts pulled out. The 8" will be for sale once it comes back out very soon.

yalincoln (4/12/2014) hi, have you seen these pics. from the shootout last year?
I have not seen those, thanks for sharing. No engine shots, whats he running? Is it a four speed car?

Its been quite on the build. I have been working on the new magazine and its been taking all my brain power. It will be off to the printer in the next couple of days. We are going to try to get the wheel wells cut this weekend so we can get the rear in place to start the ladder bar design.
Thanks for the additional info on the car Glen.

The rear is almost out. I've been down with a back injury so my son has been learning how to turn wrenches. The 8" should be out this weekend. Anyone looking for one?

Talk to me about rear wheels for the Canned Monster. What size should I go with and why. 15x8.5, 15x10, or 16x10. Tires will be 10" wide. Give me the pros and cons of each of these. I need to make a decision soon. GO!

Made a little progress on the "Canned Monster". Tires were mounted up on the wheels. I watched the poor guy at the tire shop try to mount them both up, was quite funny. As a reminder these tires are at least 40 years old and are for mock up only. The rubber is very hard and they were having a heck of a time trying to get them to work. Took three guys and a hammer if that gives you an idea. But, they're done now and hopefully will continue to hold air. We tossed them on the rear and now really see the offset of the wheels are no were near what they need to be. Since we are radiusing the wells it wont matter much.
Also starting pulling parts off the front of the car to get it ready for the new axle and other work to be done. Found something interesting. The car has a block off plate for the radio, but the car has a factory antenna that doesn't plug into anything. I found that amusing.

Hmmm, it looks like my post from yesterday didn't show up from my phone. So, to be clear the car does have jack stands under each side in front of the tires. Trust me they are there, I would not let my son under the car without them. Now Charlie's post makes more sense. The jack is there to raise and lower the rear to get it ready to pull. The photo does looks dangerous haha.

Picked up a few parts yesterday. Was able to grab the spindles we will be using. Sending them out to WAC Customs this week to get fitted on the tube axle. The vintage race tires are for mock up only but they will help get the proportions adjusted for the wheel wells. They are very vintage McCreary tires and not to soft. Anyone know how to soften up old tires???

|
Looking over the Canned Monster tonight I noted that the car has a factory block off plates for the radio and the heater on the dash, and a block off on the firewall for the heater core. It was born to be a race car. Less stuff I have to pull off which is great.
|
By Lancer - 10 Years Ago
|
These tires will never see the track, only for build purposes but they may see a few burnouts in the neighborhood. I've been coating them with Amor All and they are looking nicer.
I'll try to grab a snap of the block off plates. How rare are those btw? I've only seen a few over the years mostly for radios but never for heaters too. Having them both blocked out sure makes the dash look clean.

The motor is at Tims, he's assembling it there. The 56 is at my place. Soon they will meet.
|
By Lancer - 10 Years Ago
|
Good question.
Once the final assembly is finished then the whole thing can be painted. A little surface rust can be cleaned off and prepped for paint. Not a big deal. A bigger problem is getting all the oil off it so the paint will stick. Lots of grease/wax remover.
I'm still deciding on the color to paint the motor.
jrw429 (2/18/2014) Not meaning to hijack the thread, but I see that the block and heads have surface rust. Yes, newbie question. Why leave it like that? At what point should the block be painted? Should the surface rust be removed first, and how?

T-Shirt Artwork coming along very well.

Progress on the internals. Pistons are cleaned and balanced. The vintage pistons are Jahns, and came from Pete Blakeley. Vintage parts in our vintage gasser. Should be darn near 12:1 compression when done. Nice and crispy.
Block pic shows the relief on every cylinder to clear the 2.02" and 1.6" valves when running a .600 lift cam and rocker combo.

Lance,
They look good ! I would print front and back just like you have them. You want people to associate Speed and Chrome with Canned Heat !!! And with the hoodies if you need some extra money to finish the car, you can pull the hood up and go down to the bank, hand them a note and tell them to fill your bag ! On second thought maybe your name on front isn't a good idea .

Dude, I've been following your build since day one. The canned monster fueled my love for 55'-56' fords and now I own two! My 56' is waiting to be pulled into my shop to start my gasser project and this is the one thread that keeps my eye on the prize. Keep up the good work, man. I would love to come check this thing out and pick your brain one day. I'm in Ventura, CA and just opened up a little shop of my own, if you're ever in the area don't hesitate to stop in!

Some people are having trouble with picture posting. I can't do it with the icon but I can drag and drop.
|
By charliemccraney - 10 Years Ago

The upgrade was meant to fix problems that did exist and it seems to have fixed many of those.. while introducing others.
Drag and drop works for me but not the icon. You posted a picture a couple days ago. Do you remember how you did it?
Is the whole forum slow for you? This thread is slow for me but I notice that it is because the pictures are full size which means they have to load and that slows things down. If you are able to figure out how to post, please resize them. There is a free program I use called Photorazor for resizing.
I'm sorry I can't be much more help. Some can post pictures and some can't and I don't know why.
