Street Rodder had a article about using the jeep top cover on a top loader. It could be either of the two articles below, probably the latter nbut not sure

Feb 74 Top Shift for late Ford

Sept 04 Putting the shifter where it belongs on a top loader.

Well, I emailed Street Rodder and they blew me off. Told me they could not help me with anything that old, as far as the magazine. Im still looking!

Low and behold, they got back to me! Dec 2000 issue I guess and it was done by David Kee toploaders.  Soon as I get more info I will post it.

Make sure you dont buy the 4 speed top, they are similar except for the reverse fork. I just did my 4 speed t/loader, and once you remove the forks, rails, detent balls and find plugs to seal the case, then you,re there!Smile

Ok, looks like we are getting closer to the mystery......BigGrin I read on line last night that the correct Jeep trans. to use is the T-150 from 1976 era. Thanks for all the info fellas. Once we figure it all out, I think I will do a tech article on it. So keep the info flowing!

Sal, what I tripped over is the same as Mike pictured. This guys shop is not commercial, just a collector and doubt he ever ever lets go of anything. Be careful of the bell housing/input shaft lengths with these twuck bell housings.

Street Rodder also did write up on the Jeep conversion. Quite a few years ago. Try Sept 04. I think that it is the correct issue, but the description I have has a title something like "Putting the shift Lever in the right spot on a Ford Toploader"

For anyone tring to locate an magazine article, go to  http://hotrodindex.150m.com/

These are pics of a Jeep top shifter in a Ford 3 speed toploader.  A little over three years ago

a man had the conversions listed for sale on ebay.  I talked with him a fair amount and tried to find the correct donor jeep trans locally, but didnt follow it through.  The jeep trans was from the mid to late 70's as I recall.

Mike, located in the Siskiyou mountains, Southern, OR 292 powered 1946 Ford 1/2 ton, '62 Mercury Meteor, '55 Country Squire (parting out), '64 Falcon, '54 Ford 600 tractor.

Oooops, open beak-insert foot. I was assuming external shifters. Just yesterday afternoon I stumbled (literally) over a 3 speed topload trans in a guys shop. He said it was a mid 60s Stang trans with a jeep shift assy and he also intended it to go into one of his F100s. Did not know these were internal shifters. Also wonder if he knows the truck bell housing is deeper than car.

On the side this guy has a quite a collection of 20s to 60s rides stashed around his property. One of them is a 51 Lincoln, in the pouring rain with the drivers window half down! Car is dead stock dead straight, I offered to trade my sons good Versaille for it, nope, hope this really cool upside down bathtub survives. Learned that flat V8 Lincoln has the GM 4 speed hydro, same one that survived my teenage years whomping country roads in my much loved 53 2 door Capri? now where's that damn time machine.

Sorry about getting off track with external shifters.

Dan in Seattle
