My MSD had the mechanical advance was sticking as it needed lubed.   I could not get my timing to set right as it would either ping and idle too fast or run weak or idle too slow.   I twisted the mechanical advance by hand and found sometimes it did not spring back easlily.   A little lube on the inner pivit point and it has worked perfect since.

I use the MSD "High Vibration Coil" as it is able to mount horizonal( the standard Blaster oil filled is meant to point up) as the original coil   Remove the decal and a coat of Subaru Baja yellow on the top make the coil look stock too.  I did paint my MSD cap black to make it look more stock as well.

So buy a blaster coil and the wire plug to the coil and you are ready to go.

They don't need a box to work. It's kinda like a pertronix except in a completely new distributor that should be constructed better than stock. You just need to make sure the coil will play friendly with it.

Wouldn't you need a MSD ignition control to make unit work? Now much are they?

This distributor ran for about 2500 miles, then the truck was parked over the winter. Had problems with backfiring when I got it back out, and thought (wrongly) that it was the distributor. Needed one that worked immediately, so I was forced to purchase another one. Sent the original back to MSD, which charged me to replace the cap and rotor... and told me it was fine. Long story short, I just want I have in it back. Shipping from 99163. $250.
