I was watching this youtube (it might be Ai?) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvKpmlffMb0...............at around 4:50 they start talking about lack of oil to the top end. They also say (@ 12:20) there is a "known" fix about adding oil lines. Is there any truth to this? I don't remember anyone talking about this

22 minutes of video and there’s not a single picture of the overhead oil line or lines that some owners added to their engines to fix an overhead oiling issue. The author of that video would have you believe that every Ford Y engine produced had an overhead oiling issue. That overhead oiling issue back in the day was directly related to the use of paraffin based oils that would sludge up within the oil galleys feeding the oil to the top end of the engine. By design, the oil flow to the top of the engine was restricted at the cam journal to control the oil flow to the top of the engine. That slower oil flow would tend to plug up the oil galleys when non-detergent oil was being used. On today’s Y engines, that problem is directly related to cam cores that do not have an adequate depth on the center journal and/or the softer babbit being used in the current crop of cam bearings. To a lesser degree are the number of engines that have the center cam bearing incorrectly installed which also prevents oil from flowing as intended to the top end of the engine. The importance of proper maintenance and routine oil changes on any engine cannot be stressed enough. Here are some links to past discussions on the various oiling issues related to the Ford Y. I don't remember anyone talking about this Very old school; I don't think anyone is installing those external lines today. Kultulz addressed pretty much all of the causes and fixes for oiling issues. If, by chance, you have a cross-drilled camshaft instead of the more common with an oiling groove, there should be no need for concern. Tim McMaster recommends "pressurizing" the rocker assemblies. The Harland Sharp roller rockers arms that Ted Eaton sells, I seem to recall, are also pressurized. y-blockguy.com/tech tips/rocker_arm_assy.htm

Hello It always amazed me how people back in the day would go to all the trouble to put thru the valve cover oiling system on, Instead fixing it right. Friend told me once overhead oiling systems where a way folks were able to tell its a YB ha.

Possibly, after a failed attempt at opening that sludge-plugged, torturous oiling passage in the head, they just gave up and went with what they knew they could do (easier than pulling the head to attack the passage from both ends). Plus, back in the day, few likely even knew why the oil had quit flowing. The same guys who wouldn’t hunt around for the correct sized wrench when a Crescent was handy 😁.

Kultulz’s pictures are perfect examples of two different engines with the added overhead oilers. If that top end issue was as prevalent as the link to the video would lead you to believe, pictures of those overhead oilers would have been readily available to insert within that video. While not knowing the exact number of the millions of those Y engines that were manufactured over the years, the percentage requiring overhead oilers was extremely low and most of those were attributed to poor maintenance and service intervals and not necessarily to a design issue. Undoubtedly that percentage is significantly lower than the 4% defect rate that GM is currently comfortable with having during the last five years of crankshaft issues in the LS engines which truly is a manufacturing/design issue. I do still get the random core FYB engine that has overhead oilers installed on it. I find that a majority of those added oil lines are only on one side of the engine and not both. Delving deeper into these engines (which have been previously rebuilt), I find the center cam bearing incorrectly installed with only two of the three bearing holes being properly aligned in the block. Depending upon the clocking of the bearing, one of the upper oil holes in the center cam hole is not aligned with the appropriate hole in the bearing which makes it a 50/50 chance on which bank is getting or not getting its required oil.
