Excellent advise above regarding linkage adjustment. As Paul stated, a shop manual is absolutely necessary and there is available a Ford publication titled 1956-57 Fordomatic shop manual. A treasure trove of Fordomatic information. If this were my car, I would attach a pressure gauge to monitor line pressure also. Line pressure should be same for reverse as when in drive EXCEPT when above idle. Above idle line pressure will be higher in reverse than when in drive. I know you stated you idle speed is 500rpm so that's why it may be helpful to know what the line pressure in reverse is at that rpm. Sounds to me like the pressure may be too high in reverse at idle. Just a guess....

I don't know if this has been mentioned in either of your posts, but There is a procedure to adjust the linkage which may help in both situations. The Shop manual has this procedure. Or there is a manual on just transmissions which is available. Skyliner57 (4/12/2026)
Has anyone had an expeience where they adjusted the linkage to prevent this? Maybe adjust the U Bolt?

If the rod is inserted into the pedal and it still moves around, them the problem is another part of the linkage . Check to make sure everything is tight. Have someone work the pedal while you watch the linkage in the engine compartment to see where the problem is.. Problem could be a bad engine mount. Another possibility if the rod itself is bending. Your linkage could be too tight or a spring too strong which s causing the rod to bend. Never seen the rod bend on either of my cars. t Skyliner57 (4/10/2026)
Yes--you are correct. The end of this rod has a button type top that fits into the back of the pedal. Mine still moves around, does not push straight down. Thanks for the response.

Is the rod bent/damaged or is the pedal itself damaged?

If it is like a TBird, there is a spot on the underside of the gas pedal that the rod fits into. That keeps it straight. As far as the grommet you mentioned, I think that is just a block off for the hole and moves with the rod. (again, if it i the same as a Tbird). Feel in back of the pedal. You may feel a little bump there for the rod to insert into. If it is as I say, you may have to remove the pedal so you can move it around to insert the rod. Either that, or disconnect the rod from the linkage and then insert it into the pedal and reattach to the rest of the linkage.

The rod that goes from the accelerator pedal to the linkage inside the engine compartment is always bending and does not push straight. I know there is a rubber grommet to keep it centered. In order to get the grommet in the hole I had to slice it. Is there a method to stabalize this rod. Now, I have to chase it around with the pedal/ Thanks.
