If visitors just use the search function there is such a valuable array of topics and subjects on the Y Block
My problem is being basically computer illiterate. I have a hard time just trying to find the SEARCH FEATURE here.
But my fear is that all of this will be lost one day, as was the 54 FORD WEBSITE and recently the FYB MAGAZINE and all of the tech info contained there.

There is quite a bit of very useful information on this website forum - it really is the go to for anything Y Block related. If visitors just use the search function there is such a valuable array of topics and subjects on the Y Block. You could go for hours...

I had to chose the difficult route for a Duraspark system because I'm running a mechanical tach in my truck. The distributor is a typical '57 tach drive distributor which lent itself well for this because of the ball bearing breaker plate. Not only did the ball bearing plate provide ample realestate for the pole piece but it also moves the "pickup" coil in a true arc thus maintaining a constant air gap between the coil and reluctor. It wasn't necessary to make any serious modifications to the tach drive distributor so points and condenser could be put back in if desired. I'll try posting a couple pictures I found showing how the pickup coil was modified.

Kultulz, I used a Y-block distributor I picked up at Napa several years ago back when they still had stock of the cardone rebuilds. It's the one that has the flat sides below the top piece.

I'm interested in what DIST HOUSINGS were used in the conversion(s) ... Was an original FYB DIST HSG modified (and what model year used - 1957 to 1964) or did you go with something else (SBF)?

Thanks for the comment on your successful Duraspark conversion. I too ended up with a Ford Duraspark system on my '64 F100. From the original points ignition, to a Pertronix conversion, to an MSD ignition box triggered by a Ford Duraspark unit I modified to work in the distributor. The MSD box failed after about 5 or 6 years and I refused to pay the price for another MSD 6A box. I had several Duraspark boxes on the shelf and since I already had the Duraspark trigger unit in the distributor, I worked out a combination that IMO, is the best ignition I've had on this truck.

Last year when I put my newly-rebuilt 292 back into my 57, I found out the aftermarket CRT distributor wouldn't fit without me doing some tweaking to the firewall. It's a nice original looking car so I really didn't want to start cutting things up to make room. The original distributor went back in it's place. Still though I thought it would be nice to have something putting out a little stronger spark. I tried the pertronix but wasn't very happy with it. That's when I started digging through old posts here. Before long I went deep down the rabbit hole of duraspark conversions. It turned out that I already had the desired distributor for doing this conversion, so after ordering the required parts from Rock auto, I swapped everything out using the instructions I'd found in old posts on here. Happy to say it starts and runs great. I never would've been able to do this without the help of all you folks who know a lot more about this that I do!
