Looking at the interior rust in the distributor, for posting on e bay, I'd say it's essentially worthless..

Have to agree there for
sure.

Thanks Ted, that saves a some effort and frustration. I don't have a carb yet so I'll put it on the list and set the distributor aside or put it up on ebay.

I have a distributor but it doesn't look like others I pulled up in a quick search.

The pictured distributor is a truck distributor and is also the L-O-M (Load O Matic) design.  There's not much call for those distributors due to them being a vacuum advance only model.  Being a LOM distributor, it's carburetor specific meaning most carburetors made since 1957 will not work with it.

I did a little digging in my parts boxes and found some decent kit.

5750-471 heads
ECZ-9245B intakes (2)
Ram horn manifolds for Ford.
2 sets of rockers.
I have a distributor but it doesn't look like others I pulled up in a quick search.

Also I measured the bore and its 3.75" on a ECG block.

Hopefully it's all usable!

Is it worth the wait for a nice 312?

My personal preference would be to start with a 292 block.  Besides the issue with cracks around the main saddles with the 312’s, a large number of them have cam tunnel issues that can be difficult to deal with.  If you come across a decent 312 crankshaft, then that crank can have the mains turned down to fit the 292 block and if taken another level, the rod journals offset ground for a 3.600” stroke.  Likewise the 292 crankshaft can be offset ground for either the stock 312 3.44” stroke or simply taken a bit further out to 3.48” stroke.

Thanks for the tips. Trying to learn as much as I can and make practical choices as much as possible. I need a local guru!

One further caution. I bought a worn 312 that was running just fine in a 56 Merc, just leaking and smoking. The crank didn't pass mag check, it was cracked. But it was still running. With a rebuild and higher RPM, I'm sure it would have failed immediately.

While I am going to stay out of the pricing discussion,
I will say ALWAYS go and look at the item for sale. I have walked away from blocks that have been sleeved, cranks that are incorrect and incorrectly identified heads and block assemblys. All this stuff is 50 plus years old and may (probably) have gone thru transformations from its original manufactured state.
Educate yourself on what to look for in the component parts measurements and ask the right questions of the parts sellers.
Best to stay local and wait for the items to materalise so that way you can look at the parts, unless your up for some road trips.
Good luck in your search.

What I would pay is as follows
Motor is stuck, frozen, rusted, probably not more than $100.00
Motor turns easily but it cannot be demonstrated that it runs, up to about $300.
Motor can be demonstrated running and does seem to be in good condition, up to about $600
Freshly rebuilt with documentation to prove it, depends on just what has been done, but over $1000.

I'd be careful with the $1200 312.  If he has documentation for the crank work, that's a plus.  I have a feeling that he cannot prove that the heads were rebuilt.  Since the engine is obviously apart, you might be able to confirm that when you see them.  Ran when pulled means nothing since it has been taken apart but you should be able to assess the condition of the parts better.  In my opinion, "ran when pulled" means nothing, period.  Make sure it is complete.  This one is worth a look.  Just be cautious.  Take a mic set or caliper along to check things the best you can.

The 292 is worth it for all that you get, particularly if the rebuilt c4 claim can be proven but nothing is said of the 292, which seems most important to you.
