Ted: Just to clarify. Are you saying the holes are just air vents, there's no water circulation at these holes?
While water can flow through these holes, it’s not enough to be a significant cooling factor. Just removing the air pockets and allowing those cavities to have coolant in them is enough to prevent potential hot spots in those locations. Many of the core engines I pull down has those existing ‘vent’ holes essentially stopped up making them ineffective anyhow.
