Extra center cooling holes in the block and heads

Hi

I am rebuilding a 272+040 with ECZ-G heads for my 55 F100, and I would like to know if it is a good idea to drill the two extra center cooling holes in the block and the heads (actually I already have drill the ones in the block but I think I can tap and plug them) ?

Just remember that those holes are not cooling holes but simply vents to bleed off any air that may be trapped in the block. Doing an advanced search using ‘steam holes’ will bring up a slew of threads on this topic.

Hi Ted,

I realize that there are conflicting opinions on adding the steam holes in the earlier blocks. My understanding (perhaps incorrect) is that Ford utilized them in their later production y-blocks.

Question: When you do your engine builds, do you add the steam holes to the block and heads?

On the performance builds, I simply plug the holes in the block if the holes are already there. If the holes are non-existent, I don't add them. On the stock builds and if both the heads and block have the steam holes, then I leave them assuming neither the block or the heads have cracks at those holes.

While water can flow through these holes, it’s not enough to be a significant cooling factor.  Just removing the air pockets and allowing those cavities to have coolant in them is enough to prevent potential hot spots in those locations.  Many of the core engines I pull down has those existing ‘vent’ holes essentially stopped up making them ineffective anyhow.
