My '56 F100 272 now has a Motorcraft 2100 500 cfm 2v carb, headers, pertronix ign. and runs great. After a run on the highway, I notice that oil has been discharged from the oil draft tube and it drips a bit when initially parked. Just wondering if this is normal and if so how much oil should I expect to lose per so many miles?

Also wondering what a safe max RPM is for this stock engine?

Can you suggest a good engine manual addressing these issues?

You should not be getting oil dripping out the Draft Tube. You may need to remove the filter(and clean or replace it if dirty) and clean the return tube which returns oil to the oil pan.

Copy that, thanks. Seems like the road draft tube is often neglected with the filter and return tube plugging up over time.

Maybe about 5000. You should be able to do highway speeds all day long without problems. A typical f100 will be doing about 3500 rpm to keep up with traffic.

A manual should be available as a reprint, on CD, and originals can be found. Just about any vintage Ford place will have at least one of those available.

Fords maximum recommended RPM, with the original early stk non tubular pushrods valve train, was 5400 RPM. The 1957 factory manual had a speed chart with gear ratios & so on listed.. But, I don't know about other manual years?.. On the Road Draft Tube leak, since you are going to check the filter in it, another area to check is the Oil Filler Cap screen. Stock, that is the only place the engine receives air for the crankcase venting. If plugged up, it's a major contributor to sludge buildup..
