Just wondering what the original filter element size is for 57 TBird?

The one I have on my car is 2 1/4 x 13 1/4 OD x 11 1/4 ID approximately. That size is available here and I checked with my TBird parts supplier that I use and they supply about the same size.

It appears like it should take larger element at about 13 7/8 OD and maybe as small as 10 7/8 ID. I have done a bit of looking on the net at old photos and it looks like the element extends to the outside of the filter.

What is the thought out there, and does anyone sell the correct size?

This is the one I was told fits correctly...... and looks original.

My parts book gives following info on filter sizes:

55-57 t-bird and 57-59 car (probably with single 4 barrel)
10.81" ID - 13.69" OD - 2.12 high B7S 9601-A

57 t-bird and car with dual 4 barrel carbs
14.79" ID - 17.34" OD - 2.12 high B7S 9601-B or 2 pieces of 5 9/16" ID - 7 1/16" OD - 2 1/8 high B7A 9601-F

57 t-bird and car with supercharger
6 5/8" dia - 7 7/8" high B7A 9601-E

There is also other sizes for other car models.

The '57 Bird would use an # B7SZ-9601-B Available from Hill's Thunderbird Center at 1-800-562-1955 or if you are not concerned about Prissy points at a Show you can buy a WIX # 42063 at most Quality Automotive Parts Store. These would be with the single four barrell carb.

This is the best image I found of an original style filter with the old mesh reinforcing. As you can see the element fills the lower part of the filter completely.

The 13.3 x 2.25 is what I have but it looks too small for the base. Teros292 the dimensions you listed sound like what I suspected would be more like the correct size.

I was also thinking the larger OD and smaller ID would give better air flow with the greater paper surface area, which might hopefully equate to some improved performance.

I did do some measuring and thought it could be as high as 2.5 inches and still give enough hood clearance.

I wasn't worried about the old style reinforcing but more something that looks like it fits properly and maybe flows better. I should be over in the USA next year for a vacation/shopping trip so if there are any more suggestions that would be great.

I have a '57 housing I put on my outfit when the other, more factory dress is on the engine. Using an oversize diameter - when using the 2.25 height - resulted in more shrouding of the filter than I thought it needed (fit tight to the front).

The Wix number 42063 works well.

The #B7SX-9601-B is more available than the "A" version but doesn't have the round holes in the screen.

I think I get what you mean. I do have an old 14 x 3 element (actually measured about 13 7/8 which I'm guessing they call a 14 inch) that I sat on the base to see what it looks like and it did not appear to too close at the front as the base steps away quickly from the element on mine.

The reason I started the topic was there is no 14 x 2.25 available here that I know of, and my normal TBird supplier only had the 13.30 size, so I wasn't even sure if a 14 x 2.25 even existed until you guys gave me some part numbers.

The old filter I have that is the correct OD but is too tall, converts to 353mm. There is nothing available like that and 2.25 inches or 57mm tall over here that I have been able to find.

I use a filter for a 65 Mustang HP289. Its the correct size and has the orange rubber with the round metal holes. I get these from Mustangs Unlimited. All the T-bird resto books I have just list a black rubber with white paper pleats element and looks cheap to me.
