I'm thinking about cutting the mufflers of my Galaxie off. I have dual exhaust, and a H pipe just under the tranny, and all pipes are 2". The mufflers I have now are 40 series flowmasters, they sound nice, but a fellow of mine that's building a '47 Merc with a 292 passed with it by my house, I I loved the sound of the straight pipes he has.
My only worry is burning an exhaust valve, with the lack of backpressure.
Anyone run straights?

You might burn an exhaust valve, but it wouldn't be because of the straight pipes. Your local law enforcement folks might object to the noise however. What irritates me is that motorcycles get by with extremely loud pipes, but a guy with loud pipes on his car attracts the attention of the police.

My concern would be the sound INSIDE the car while at a constant highway speed... w00t

John, I agree that some motorcylces are way too loud. But as a motorcyclist myself I can attest the CHP does indeed notice!w00t But I can also see the side of the motorcyclist. The pipes on my motorcycle are somewhat loud but I consider it a safety device to GRAB the attention of the OLD CURMUDGEON in his LAND YACHT before he makes a left hand turn in front of me or runs me off the road when changing lanes.w00t

Master Cylinder:

I don't want to get into a motorcycle/car argument, but tell me how your loud pipes exiting to the rear of your cycle will alert a motorist coming toward you with his windows rolled up and his air conditioner and radio on. He is responsible for seeing you and yielding before making a left turn.

OK, bad example, I wasn't thinking of coming toward me, I was thinking more of someone already in a turn lane, waits for a car to go by and then makes his move... right in front of me. And I can't count how many times I've heard "I didn't see him/you"... so MAYBE he'll hear me, haha. Smooooth

But your correct, not worth an argument.

I'm a swing hitter here, My Triumph has slightly loud pipes, but inside the law. AND my Horn works, doesn't work on my '57 but you can hear it pretty well on the street. Lined up against the Hurricane, not so much!w00t

I did get a ticket once for straight pipes on my old Sportster. Straight pipes wont burn you valves, running with no manifold on the head might. Although some old aircraft engines had pretty short stacks. (not talking about pancakes)

In my area up in the N.West, extremely loud, no muffler, Bike pipes can be very annoying. What's really makes me shake my head is that some of these bikes belong to club members that are alleged to be criminal organizations. The police & authorities claim they are cracking down on these bike gangs, but they can't or won't even site them for noise violations! What a joke!..

Must be the same all over the world. Some of these Harleys with straight through exhausts that get around are ridiculous, though I haven't heard it as much lately so maybe they are clamping down. Same here if you had that on a car you would get pulled up by police. I've been caught were they open it up going past and my window was down and it hurts the ear. I wouldn't want to hear straight through pipes driving around my suburb all the time.
