I'm thinking about cutting the mufflers of my Galaxie off. I have dual exhaust, and a H pipe just under the tranny, and all pipes are 2". The mufflers I have now are 40 series flowmasters, they sound nice, but a fellow of mine that's building a '47 Merc with a 292 passed with it by my house, I I loved the sound of the straight pipes he has. My only worry is burning an exhaust valve, with the lack of backpressure. Anyone run straights?

You might burn an exhaust valve, but it wouldn't be because of the straight pipes. Your local law enforcement folks might object to the noise however. What irritates me is that motorcycles get by with extremely loud pipes, but a guy with loud pipes on his car attracts the attention of the police.

My concern would be the sound INSIDE the car while at a constant highway speed...

John, I agree that some motorcylces are way too loud. But as a motorcyclist myself I can attest the CHP does indeed notice! But I can also see the side of the motorcyclist. The pipes on my motorcycle are somewhat loud but I consider it a safety device to GRAB the attention of the OLD CURMUDGEON in his LAND YACHT before he makes a left hand turn in front of me or runs me off the road when changing lanes.

Master Cylinder:
I don't want to get into a motorcycle/car argument, but tell me how your loud pipes exiting to the rear of your cycle will alert a motorist coming toward you with his windows rolled up and his air conditioner and radio on. He is responsible for seeing you and yielding before making a left turn.

He's just (fondly) remembering the Ed Roth car-toon -
"LOUD PIPES SAVE LIVES"
Later.............I had to go look this one up - says "MERC ON A MISSION - LAKE PIPES SAVE LIVES"

OK, bad example, I wasn't thinking of coming toward me, I was thinking more of someone already in a turn lane, waits for a car to go by and then makes his move... right in front of me. And I can't count how many times I've heard "I didn't see him/you"... so MAYBE he'll hear me, haha.
But your correct, not worth an argument.

I'm a swing hitter here, My Triumph has slightly loud pipes, but inside the law. AND my Horn works, doesn't work on my '57 but you can hear it pretty well on the street. Lined up against the Hurricane, not so much!

I did get a ticket once for straight pipes on my old Sportster. Straight pipes wont burn you valves, running with no manifold on the head might. Although some old aircraft engines had pretty short stacks. (not talking about pancakes)

In my area up in the N.West, extremely loud, no muffler, Bike pipes can be very annoying. What's really makes me shake my head is that some of these bikes belong to club members that are alleged to be criminal organizations. The police & authorities claim they are cracking down on these bike gangs, but they can't or won't even site them for noise violations! What a joke!..

Must be the same all over the world. Some of these Harleys with straight through exhausts that get around are ridiculous, though I haven't heard it as much lately so maybe they are clamping down. Same here if you had that on a car you would get pulled up by police. I've been caught were they open it up going past and my window was down and it hurts the ear. I wouldn't want to hear straight through pipes driving around my suburb all the time.

Wait! WHHAAAT??? The electrics work on an English bike??? Whoa...

OK, we know how we feel about loud pipes on M/Cs. How about the original question? Straight pipes on a 292 Galaxie.

I think even a young guy will get tired of the noise real quick with straight pipes.

Scary Huh? The horn and switches are Denso. NOT Lucas. Even Triumph couldn't stand their parts! Don't cut the pipes off the Galaxy add cutouts, then you can have it both ways!

Flowmaster 40s I believe are race mufflers or close to it..plenty loud as is. People on MCs & car owners that insist on running without mufflers should be ticketed. The public in urban areas are already subject to having their ears assaulted with excessive noise on an on going basis... I like the sound of a good running engine as well as anyone, but the noise level needs to be reasonable.

You pick your poison I guess, I live quiet and enjoy when someone opens up a Harley, and there's a couple street rods out here which once in a while will let it rip much to my auditory amusement. Then there's my Y which is what the old farts say is the way a car should sound. Sound police not my thing.

I've always said that the sweetest sounds in world were a flathead, Y-Block & a Harley, but when the neighbor across the lake fires up his Harley at 5AM and heads to work, that can fall off my list real soon. I'm running dual Smitty's and sweet is all I can say. Gary

Im running split 2" with 22" smithy's about halway along maybe a bit of the muff is forward of the the heat sheild... Sweetest sound ..
I was running straight pipes on the flathead in the 35 but Im sick of it just didnt sound right.. It did sound like a small motor trying to hard ... I have since put on two short 12" glasspacks but unfortuneately I have a rear wheel cyl leak so Im going nowhere until the hub puller turns up .. Dang!

I'm running some old cherry bombs now and they still sound great but I have set of new Smittys and was thinking about putting them on but was wondering if it takes a while for them to get "broke-In" or do they sound good from the start ?? All thoughts appreciated.
