I just spoke on the phone with a friend of mine. He called to tell me that one of his former co-workers, a NASA engineer, had gone to work for edelbrock and has been working on a 426 Hemi head project which will be on the market soon. He also said the next project was a Willys/Jeep inline 6 head, to be followed rapidly with a Y block Ford head. Anybody hear anything about this? John isn't selling the patterns to Vic and company, is he? At any rate, from what I gathered from my friend and his buddy, the market is apparently ripe for vintage engine parts. I asked Vic during the power tour last week if they were planning to re-release the old curved script Y valve covers, didn't get an answer...just a smile. Maybe good news on the Y block front for more speed goodies.

Vic, a real dissapointment to his daddy, can make all the Y-block parts he wants, now! I still wouldn't buy them from him. Support John Mummert, Frank Rice, Lindsay and all the others that have led the way in the last 10 years while he called our favorite engine junk. Chuck

Thing is Edelbrock announced a couple of years ago about the release of a three deuce manifold for Y Blocks. Even had them listed in their catalog. Ever see them? No. Talk is cheap and until I see anything from Edelbrock for Y Blocks where I could actually touch it I'll believe it. Still won't buy it tho... w00t

Even if Edelbrock copies the Mummert head (and that's what they'll do) John will still outsell him 2 or 3 to one. We all know Edelbrock's opinion of fords in General and Y blocks in particular and the majority won't support his Y block parts. What does the fact that they're working on a AMC inline six head BEFORE the Y block tell you about their
priorities?
Apparently John was right to worry about Vic copying his tooling. Kinda like China.

they'll probably be $5000 a pair and a copy of the stock head, what a great deal. he'll make them so you can use SBC valve covers for your t-bird, HA!HA!HA!

If they make them the same quality as there intakes you might as well just stick with the iron heads. I've sent manifolds back that were cast so bad the only thing that could be said for them is that they were aluminum.

Charlie, You'd be surprised at the number of Aluminum foundries that would be happy to run John's patterns.
He may have to have them shipped to him from a longer distance, but they're out there. Think Dart, Hot Heads, Holley, etc. I'll bet none of them use Edelbrock's foundry. Distance and machining would become the issues for John.

Frank, i guess main advantage with edelbrock is their machining programmes that would see heads progress quicker than john getting to them? Yes as with everything nowadays, quality is out the window and price seems to be main concern to buyers. How many people do you know that scour the net looking for the cheapest item and bag the dearer ones as ripoffs! ha, most are dearer due to not being cheap chinese products generally. just a thought! Smile

Bill I've never had the opportunity to see the Edelbrock Foundry or machining. I'm sure it's very impressive, I have seen the sales brochures and it looks very modern and clean. I guess my point was that, at least in the Midwest US there's still a few Automotive style foundries capable of running John's parts. It didn't work for me because my volumes were so small that they didn't want to deal with me. I worked for a number of years for Winters in Ohio, where we made all the scrub stuff, Aluminum intakes, early FI stuff for the Corvette, L88 intakes, Pontiac Ram air V's, the original Viper blocks and heads, Can-am 500" blocks blah, blah. I can usually tell pretty quickly what a foundry is capable of. I think John will be able to find some one else if he needs to. However, like someone said, we heard this rumour 6-8 years ago, Heard about the re-incarnated Three two manifold etc, and nothing. John will have a better feel than any of us as to the validity of their statements and I'm sure he'll pull the patterns if he thinks Vic is planning something. I'm not going to worry about it until I see it. I don't believe them.
OH, and for what it's worth, I tried one of Vic's Pontiac intakes that they recommended years ago on a GTO. It went considerably slower than the Factory Aluminum Ram air intake, or even the stock Cast iron 4bbl. Not impressed. Luckily I was able to sell it for about what I paid for it to a competitor!Wink
