Hey-

It went to be magnafluxed and hot tanked with 1 and 5 caps holding in the crank. I picked it up and (here it comes) failed to check the box of returned parts (cam, cam bearings, freeze plugs, etc) for my main caps.

It was taken to the machinist, box, crank, and block and later found to be minus number 1 and 5 main caps, the other caps had been removed prior to sending it out and I still have them.  Of course the first place has no knowledge of there ever being any main caps on the block.

Soooooooo........ anyone that can help me out I would sure appreciate it.  Right now I have a block that has been machined and is ready for reassembly sitting in a bag.

Mike

I'd rather be lucky than good.................

    but good ain't bad!!

292 or 312? Once you find some, it'll be back to the machine shop for line honing. Barry

Get a pile of caps as hole offsets are different in the blocks.  Caps from journals 1, 2, 4, & 5 on the 292’s are technically the same so don’t be restricted to just looking for #1 and #5 caps.  If you have a 312, then the rear cap is shorter and that one is special.  On my end, I’ve found it easier to be dealing with full sets of matched caps from another engine rather than piece mealing single caps to an engine.  You need to talk to the guy actually doing the align boring (or honing) and get his input on this.  The amount of experience he has will be a determining factor in just how good a job you can get done and how it’s done.

Once align bored or align honed, the block will need another cleaning.  If you have cam bearings already in your block, then that could be a problem in getting the block ‘properly’ cleaned without removing the bearings.
