Hollow Head (9/2/2012)
This is what happened today... And Jyrki lost that one due huge breakout! Our dial was too gentle . And we lost propably right head gasket due 1.5 bar / 21 psi of boost ... So, 8.723 with iron heads and only 292 cid +0.030 overbore. Videos will come later as usual. Good job guys. You’re matching the 60’ times I had at Columbus but you’re obviously making more horsepower based on the mph numbers and that quicker et. Sounds like you’ve still got more left in it so keep at it.

Ted, now we know how fast and hard it is to go under 9's and really have to say that without boost, we wouldn't have done it. Your times are now even more impressive than before! What issues did you have with your suspension? Our only problem was that hopping at the start but other than that, it went straight as a train. We now have to wait until next year to go back to track, but that is good time to make minor modifications and re-thinking. And sure, if we can get a better launch the time will go down again and we also have to find more top end speed. Maybe gearing or just more rpm at the end. Our limiter was set to 7000 rpm this time.

Head Do you think you have too much weight forward and that is causing the chassis to unload during launch? Most race cars like yours have very little weight forward of the engine. great job and you still have some left.

Well, as we are total rookies in drag racing and the car and the driver has lot less than 50 runs done, it's a bit hard to say. Weight at the front is not an issue, if we think about intercooler and the pipes. They don't weight a lot. Y-block itself with iron heads is heavy and two turbos and wastegates do add weight comparing to Ted's car. More of an issue, I think, is the rpm at the line and tyre pressures. And, with a solid mount rear end, what can you do? Well, now that that was said, Mark Williams Drawings state that floater rear end is suggested for blown cars... Wonder why??? And, if we get better 60 ft times, there will come wheelies and that adds difficulties. But hey, that's Drag Racing. It's not meant to be easy, right? Hmmm... maybe during the winter we will find that thing that helps us to better our time over that missing 0.757 seconds to beat that old World Record .

I just offer thing that I have encountered over the years, on my brothers altered it had solid rear and coilovers on the front, too much travel made it very unpredictable on launches. We limited the travel to 2 inches on the front shocks and cured the problem, Your car is solid at both ends and that may be why the chassis is unloading when it launches,no traves to help plant the tire. Maybe you could find a parking lot or someplace to try different things to "stop the hop" . If you burnouts are better, then the tire pressure could be higher at launch and needs to be droped to 5 or 6 pounds cold. Long winter to think about things. You guys will be fine I am sure.

Gary congrats on posting at exactly 3:12 That has to be a good omen.
On the Wheel hop issue I run a solid rear suspension Altered with a 31x10.5Wx15 tire.. My car only ran in the 10 sec range, but I was plauged by wheel hop too.. I found out my tire is not right for an altered chassis, It has too stiff of a sidewall. However by dropping the pressure down to 6-7 lb it cured the problem. Solid suspension cars need tires with flexible sidewalls

Hollow Head (9/6/2012) Ted, now we know how fast and hard it is to go under 9's and really have to say that without boost, we wouldn't have done it. Our limiter was set to 7000 rpm this time.I had two runs where the car took hard turns immediately at the launch. One was a hard left and the other was a hard right. While the track is suspect on the hard left as the starting line was being worked on just prior to me doing the burnout, the hard right really took me by surprise. I'll add that track prep this year was lacking and the threat of rain and rain delays didn't help either. The hard right occurred during eliminations while I was running against Harry Hutton and because it was an elimination run, I straightened out the car and attempted to chase him down. That might have worked with a less experienced driver but not with Harry. I did still manage to run 144+mph on that run but the et suffered on that run as it slowed to a 9.44.But back to the suspension; I’m suspecting I’m hitting the wheelie bars too hard and that’s helping to unload the rear tires. For this event, I had just changed the rear tires as I had been running 11X34’s and went with 14½X32’s. That was to address some wheel spin issues I was having when using the transbrake. Was running 7 psi in the 11’s tires and 6½ psi seems to be the ticket for the 14½” tires. At this point, I’m looking at changing the angle on the top bars on the four link to help soften the launch.

I'm sure you noticed but the turbo on the right bank was showing a little smoke each run. The gasket must have already started to fail. You really have the competition running scared! When long time racers red light its because they are not sure if they can catch you. Keep them flying! Chuck
Y's guys rule! Looking for McCullouch VS57 brackets and parts. Also looking for 28 Chrysler series 72 parts. And early Hemi parts.
