Jim,

As you know, my 65 Cyclone was a very special limited edition with that hood ornament.  As a matter of fact, I think it was the only Cyclone ever built with that particular hood ornament.  I no longer have the Cyclone but still have that ornament after 47 years  BigGrin

buddy, how about a pic of the ornament, curious.Wink

Buddy,

I remember seeing that Comet - that was the one with the fancy expensive hood ornament was it not? Smile

That would make sense from this chart that it would be a C5ZF-x since it lists Mustang, Falcon and Fairlane 289 4V but not Comet other than HiPo.

Hey guys,

In 1965 bought a new Comet Cyclone and it had the 4100 1.08 venturi carburetor so I decided to check with my local Advance Auto Parts store to see if this carburetor is still available and it is for $291.00 with a core.

Doug,

I appreciate your input and do plan on purchasing a 1.08 venturi carburetor whenever I can locate one.  I agree with you in that ever thing I've read says the 1.08 venturi will give the best overall performance for the 322 cid.  Since my engine came without a carburetor I'll use the 1.12 venturi to get it on the road for now.  Thanks

It would be worth remembering several things about the Ford/Autolite carb on a smaller engine:

1st is that you are rarely driving with Wide Open Throttle. When you are driving at steady speed with less than WOT the size of the venturi isn't much of an issue because most of the mixing of air and fuel is taking place as the fuel cascades off the partially opened throttle plates.

2nd the 4100 is a vacuum secondary carb.  If the engine will not make sufficient vacuum to open the secondaries all the way, it is effectively a smaller carb.

To optomize the carb for max power for the engine would make, selection of the venturi size more important especially if a racing class required a particular carb size. But for a street engine it will be more important to optomize and tune for smooth idle, off idle responce, power valve issues etc.

I had a 1.12 venturi 352 carb on my '56 301 Y fordo Pickup truck.  It ran well but had a little off idle stumble which I think was a result of a little wear in the link to the Accel pump. but I didn't get rid of the stumble before I sold the truck

Hey guys, thanks to all of you for the suggestions and detailed information you've given me.  Its been very helpful and I had planned on my first choice being a 4100 1.08 verturi but I went to my local salvage yard today and bought a 4100 carburetor from a 1959 T Bird (352 engine) which I would assume is a 1.12 venturi 600 cfm.   I haven't had a chance to check the numbers yet, but I couldn't turn it down because it only cost me ten dollars.  I also want to pass along some information about the experience I had with the master overhaul kit I purchased for my 312 that's been bored .060 over.  All the parts were name brand American parts but when I placed my compression rings in the cylinder to check the ring end gap clearance I discovered the second or bottom compression rings had .140 ring gap clearance and were for a standard bore 292 and had been packaged wrong.  When I installed my new intake and exhaust valves in the  heads I discovered the intake valves (Elgin) had the keeper groves cut too high on the valve stem causing the keepers to be flush with the top of the valve stem when installed.  My supplier checked with Elgin and found out they had improperly machined the keeper groves on the intake valves and Elgin would be contacting their suppliers to recall that batch.  I'm sure some of you have ran into similar problems.  I just glad I was paying attention to detail.

Hi     an interesting thread for me as i have a 1.12 4100 and am going to use on my project   so i will follow your progress with great interest. Teds carb test is in the Y-Block mag and the 1.08 did better than the 1.12.  another Y-Block enthusiast, J. Christenson rates these carbs highly pointing out their fuel consumption on dyno tests.(pity he does not use this site)      depending on finances Pony carbs offer rebuilt versions including a spread bore version , 1.08 primary 1.12 secondary  they also rate them highly. i also believe Summit offers a copy.

I have run 1.02, 1.08 and 1.14 venturi 2100s on my 292.  The 1.14 Mustang carb was the best for fun, but settled in on the 1.08 for combo of fun and mileage.

322 cid falls right in the middle of the 1.08/1.12  4100 series respective to engine displacement.  So either way it is a compromise.  Will the smaller carb get 10 more or less HP, dont know.   The club 54 site is a great resource, but it appears to me that it hasnt given adequate flexibility to the 2100/4100 series of carbs.  I did recently ask the current guru, Ed, about the 322 vs. 1.12 352 carb, and he thought it should work too.

Guys are running 1.08 4100s on 272 and less displacements, and are happy.  Having said that other guys are running 1.21 2100s on Jeep 304s and are happy Hehe .

Word to the wise:  1.21 2100 dont work well on 289/292/302/304/312

The 600 cfm 4100 is likely to much carb for your car unless you are using the new heads or done something to make much more HP. The 1.08 venturi 4100 would be my choice for a carb.

If looking for a 1.08 Autolite 4100 be aware that not all 1.08's were created equal as the 1.08 was also used as a smogger carb on the big 428 FE engines. Some are California emissions carbs also. Check the numbers on the foot of the carb before putting your money down as those smogger carbs did not run well on the big engines and are very hard to make run well on the small blocks. If you change the booster venturi they will work better however you need the good 1.08 booster venturi to do this fix so there is no savings.

My opinion the best 1.08's are the C6ZF which was the last year 1.08's used on the 66 Mustang with a 289 engine.

Next best is the C5Zf which is for the 65 Mustang with 289. One of the booster venturi's is different than the C6Zf and the C6ZF has a hot idle compensator.

Next in line is the C6PF which was the over the counter replacement for the above carbs and the FE engines. It is a good carb, very close the the above ones.

If you find a 1.08 with a different number be wary.

Here is link to ton of info on the 4100's. You make have to highlight and paste it.
