I am restoring it but only as far as rust removal etc.

I want to make a daily/weekend driver out of it.

It will never be a showcar, just a nice old dog with an original stock Y block.

Rick,

I agree that the right side of the engine is very busy. I'm yet to go down the dual exhaust/header road but I can see a lot of issues. It would be interesting to see if the Jerry Christenson or new Mummert headers work with a floorshift.

Snowcone, I guess it depends on what your planning. If you're just going to enjoy your car as it is or restore it, or modify it in some way. The information is out there. It's good to join a club. This forum is an excellent source of information but not necessarily focused on your particular car but great for general info and problem solving.

The great thing is you have your car and you can go from there.

Cheers

Here in Oz we think it is odd to have the shift on the right side of the column. All our Fords had a left hand column shift on the manuals. Funnily enough when we got the first auto in 57 they kept the gear shift on the right. There was mixed feelings about it and the 59 Fairlane went back to left hand shift for the auto.

It was an issue for some as the shift is very close to the door and pillar.the biggest hassle though is the lack of room in or cars down the right side of the engine, with the steering, clutch, gear shift and starter motor all fighting for their own bit of space. It is even tighter if you Want to run a twin exhaust system. Tri y exhausts are very hard to squeeze in. Most use a fabricated header similar to the standard exhaust but with the right hand outlet flange rotated 90 degrees. The left hand side of the engine bay is very bare.

I am sure others will have some comments.

Thats a very interesting library you have there Bill.Looks like there were several unique Ozzie catalogues after all. Were all export(to Oz) right hand drives or were they a mix of left and right? If they were right hand it must have been a little awkwrd especially with the standard shift on the column right next to the drivers door. Were any cars automatics or all standard shift?

Interesting seeing the variations on the Canadian Meteor. Were the export models all right hand drive? As I understand all exported vehicles     were done through Ford of Canada.I see parts catalogues from Oz for these cars listed on Ebay occasionally but they are the Canadian issued standard parts books like I have in my library of manuals. How did the dealerships determine what exterior trim parts to order if they only had the regular Canadian Ford and Meteor parts catalogues?Looking at the pics there is quite a combination of different years of Meteor parts on them.

Mark, you,re right, most of our 57,58,59 customlines were a mixture of left over 55.56 parts, workshop manuals and parts books specifically for 58,59 star models are rare to non existant. Over here we dont have the details you seem to have relating to manufacture, production and sales nubers etc. there is some local old newspaper/mag adds for them but real details are scarce as i said.  Ford motor co here at one time would send from their archives advertising posters for a small fee. There were glove box user guide hand books, but most repair books were 56 local only. I have most reference books but no real 58 specific w/s manuals. The dealers had microfisch files with parts, these were obviously US/ Canadian parts etc..Smile I worked at 2 ford dealers and never forget when they had regular shelf cleanup in parts section, all the unclaimed back ordered anddead stock was put in big wooden crates to be sold off to smaller dealers, we were offered anything for $1.00 a peice. 56 grill halves, parking lights, side trim, etc only problem was we were paid small amount and i,d be 2 months pay booked up in parts.  Smile

At least the other Aussies that came over with the "OLD Crusty One" were respectable representatives of Australia! Wink
