Stamping them in a discreet and non-stress rising location is what seems to be the most common. That would be the most permanent and would not disappear during a normal cleaning operation. Initials are what I see the most of.

I think the machinist is being honest about it. Many would just say tough luck and talk about previous damage. Knocking off on the bill would be appropriate. Chuck

Machinest said " I guess I owe you a crank". My thinking is like Tims in it probably was not a good piece to start with BUT it was left in his care for evaluation. The other one of the two is O.K. and being ground. It is my crank as I knew the markings.I will reinspect both pieces of it for flaws. I think it best to ascertain a value on a replacement crank and just have him knock that amount off my bill. Nice comment about "dropping the crank off"- It cracked me up (pun intended :w00t Thanks for the input. Oldmics

I’ll agree with Tim in that if the crankshaft broke simply by falling over, it was already a problem in the making. When leaving parts at any machine shop, be sure to mark your parts before "dropping them" off to keep everyone ‘honest’.

oldcarmark (5/23/2011) What did the machinist say?Usually if crank was cracked leading to it breaking then there should? be telltale shiney/dark areas where break occured? maybe not but at least have a look or get opinion, but was probably weak to break by falling over as tim mentions.

If it broke in two just by being knocked over it wasn't a very good crank to begin with.
