Up here in New England we also have Ice racing but not straight ahead. Once the ice is thick enough they plow a circuit on a lake or pond and run against the clock. Usually with several cars on the ice at one time but started at intervals. I had a VW bug with an EMPI motor that was a real street sleeper. I usually did well on the ice as I was sort of a "wild child". I would use the berms to bounce through the hard turns. Sort of like a pool shot. And would always hit the end of the track a speed. Usually resulting in a spectacular jump over the berm for the first turn. I had two big problems. First I kept catching the vehicle that started ahead of me so I had to slow and look for a spot to pass them. Second was those ^$^$# Saabs (1970's). One or two of them would always managed to take the first couple of spots. The only way I could beat them is if the screwed up or didn't show up!Smile Taking corners on ice at 40-60MPH feels like your running NASCAR tracks. What a rush. Chuck in NH

Check these older pictures. They even run Outlaw Sprints on this circuit! These guys even run wheel to wheel. How cool!

When I was a kid, growing up in the Detroit area, Lake St. Clair would freeze over. They did exactly what Chuck described, plowed a course and turned you loose. Only thing I can remember is lots of crashes and being so cold I could hardly walk. Later I saw them short track motorcycles on another frozen lake in Northern Michigan. They used 2" long sharpend Studs in the tires. Lord help you if you fell down, the next guy would use you for a pincushion!w00t

Frank,

they still do the short track motorcycle racing on the lake in front of my house. It is fun to watch those guys on the ice, but in my opinion, they are nuts! Saw one colision where a rider had his head ran over by another bike. Those studded tires are like a chain saw! Another 1/2" and it would be chewing flesh! The other interesting thing to see is the bush pilots. A lot of them pull the pontunes off there planes and replace them with skis. It makes for a real interesting landing on the ice!!! w00t

I love the smell of burning rubber in the morning!
