I've been trying to spin my oil pump from the shaft . The electric drill spins it but seems to be struggling. After I stopped spinning it, the drill was smoking a little bit. I'm getting a little oil up in the rockers arms, at the end of the pushrods. But not as much as I was expecting. I'm wondering if I'm holding the drill a little bit crooked causing friction at the socket on the shaft.
I'm anxious to verify the oil pump is functioning correctly so I can finally get the engine in.
I forgot to say, it's a 54 capri with 317 lyb

My 3/8 drill labored to do it  just like yours.  I have a 1/2 drill and did it that way.  Got a friend you could borrow a bigger drill from ?

I found that having a 1/2" drill (with a cord) is a necessity for those times that nothing else will work.  I picked one up a few years ago for around $50 when I needed something with enough oooomph to drill a 3 3/8" hole with a hole saw in my dashboard for a tach.  If it died tomorrow I'd get another one.  

I prelube the engines by hand using a speed handle.  It typically only takes 20 seconds to fill an empty filter and then no more than an additional 30-60seconds to get oil up to the rockers depending upon the engine family I am working with.  Once the galleys fill with oil, the drag on the oil pump can be felt through the speed handle while turning it.  For both the Ford Y (FYB) and Lincoln Y (LYB) engines and if they do not build up oil pressure in that allotted time, then the grommet on the oil tube at the oil pump inlet could be pulling in some air thus preventing the oil pump from doing its job.

How much oil should I see up in the rockers area? Like i said, I'm seeing wet on the top of the push rods. Not oil flowing . I'll try to post a pic next time I attempt with a bigger drill.

If the overflow tubes are still in place, then expect a steady stream of oil out of each of those when prelubing the engine.  If the rocker arms have been converted to pressurized oiling, then just a weep of oil from the rockers when prelubing should prove to be sufficient.
