I plan to remove the starter to check the bendix etc.
Would appreciate any hints. Like getting the top bolt out, having enough room to remove the starter once the bolts are out, etc.
Thanks.

Long extension and feel. Its more aggravation than hard. You will also need to turn the steering wheel hard left to make a hole to get the starter out. Don't forget to unhook the battery.

Y's guys rule!
Looking for McCullouch VS57 brackets and parts. Also looking for 28 Chrysler series 72 parts. And early Hemi parts.

When you remove the starter, replace the top bolt with a stud threaded on both sides, like ones that fasten the carburator to the intake manifold. That will enable you to let the starter hang in place on the stud after you stab it in place. Replace the bottom two bolts and source a nut for the stud on top. I got this advice from another member on this site and it worked well for me. I agree that turning the wheels all the way to one side gave more access to reach up with the starter.

Pulled the starter, replaced the drive and had the starter motor rebuilt. I now think it is jammed, the battery shows 11+ volts, will not turn the starter. I seem to recall rocking a car in gear to unjam the starter----am I correct? Thanks.

Do you mean 11 volts at rest or when turning the key? If at rest, I would try starting with a decent battery at 12.8 or similar.

Rocking the car as an attempt to free a stuck starter could be done if you have a manual transmission. But, if a starter is stuck such that rocking the vehicle is necessary, there more than likely is some serious issues going on. When you attempt to crank the engine, does the starter solenoid pick up? What is the battery voltage when attempting to crank the engine over? I assume the starter spun freely by hand before installing it. Another issue could be that the starter is not correctly seated into the bell housing. I have never been a fan of the rubber seal that Ford used where the starter pilots into the bell housing for that exact reason and simply eliminate that seal. You have probably already checked most of this - good luck....
