I plan to remove the starter to check the bendix etc. Would appreciate any hints. Like getting the top bolt out, having enough room to remove the starter once the bolts are out, etc. Thanks.

Long extension and feel. Its more aggravation than hard. You will also need to turn the steering wheel hard left to make a hole to get the starter out. Don't forget to unhook the battery.

When you remove the starter, replace the top bolt with a stud threaded on both sides, like ones that fasten the carburator to the intake manifold. That will enable you to let the starter hang in place on the stud after you stab it in place. Replace the bottom two bolts and source a nut for the stud on top. I got this advice from another member on this site and it worked well for me. I agree that turning the wheels all the way to one side gave more access to reach up with the starter.
