same crank ted, not bore size

Wish I could say I was testing you, but you are right.  The 256 and 272 engines shared the same block while the 239 and 256 engines shared the same crankshaft.  A bit of brain fade here on my part.  Thanks for the catch.

There's a good chance that engine is a 239 but it will take a tear down in which to verify as the 256 engines shared the same bore size.

Which makes me think that the block is a later SERVICE REPLACEMENT for the CLV 239/256 as was the B5AE for the 272 (later service replacement).

This block was most likely the first one noticed.

Need the CASTING ID DATE CODE

Paul.  Good catch on catching what was a typo on my part.  I did mean B4AE and have gone back and corrected that.  The rest of the statement still stands.  There's a good chance that engine is a 239 but it will take a tear down in which to verify as the 256 engines shared the same bore size.

Ted - the question was on a B4AE block ( see pic), not on a C4AE.  Seems to be a 239 block.  This seems to be a big mystery that no one has seen before

Ted (11/10/2024)
No particular information on my end regarding the C4AE-A designation on the block.  Likely a service block and being from a truck, a replacement for an original engine.  A date code from the block would help to nail down the exact year the block was actually cast and suspect it was in the 1957/1958 era.  That was the period of time Ford was switching over the casting number nomenclature from the old system to the new.

The CASTING ID NO location indicates a CLV BLOCK.

The CASTING ID DATE CODE can narrow it down further.

Could it originally have been a marine or industrial application?
