My '56 Crown Vic had a 292. I built a fresh one after finding a junk yard block as a foundation for my new build. Well, a few weeks ago we pulled the old 292 and put in our beautifully built refresh 292. PROBLEM: The fresh engine sets about 1" forward of the old engine. The main problem is attaching the transmission to the cross member and the clutch linkage. I bought new engine mounts but as close as we can measure, they are identical to the old mounts. We tried to measure the location of the motor mounts as located on the block and this also appears to be identical.
We put a come-along on the engine and pulled as far rearward as possible to take up any slop in the holes. We are dazed and confused...
So what could be the reason??? And just what in hell can I do about it. The only solution we can think of is pulling the engine and making new holes in the frame location about 1" further rearward and that may not be practical. We spent a weekend getting the engine installed in place and not looking forward to pulling it again..
