Strange Installation Problem - Engine too far forward

My '56 Crown Vic had a 292.  I built a fresh one after finding a junk yard block as a foundation for my new build.  Well, a few weeks ago we pulled the old 292 and put in our beautifully built refresh 292.
PROBLEM:  The fresh engine sets about 1" forward of the old engine.  The main problem is attaching the transmission to the cross member and the clutch linkage.
I bought new engine mounts but as close as we can measure, they are identical to the old mounts.  We tried to measure the location of the motor mounts as located on the block and this also appears to be identical.

We put a come-along on the engine and pulled as far rearward as possible to take up any slop in the holes.  We are dazed and confused...

So what could be the reason???   And just what in hell can I do about it.  The only solution we can think of is pulling the engine and making new holes in the frame location about 1" further rearward and that may not be practical.  We spent a weekend getting the engine installed in place and not looking forward to pulling it again..

Can the mounts be backwards?
By MoonShadow - 4 Years Ago
Reverse the motor mounts. The bolts are offset from side to side. I'd have to go out and look but I believe the open side of the mount points to the rear of the engine. If you take them both out it will be fairly obvious.

The mounts are installed as the originals and as shown in your photo.  Yes, they are offset, but if I reverse them, the problem gets worse, moving the engine even further forward.

Thanks

6 and 8 cylinder ;mounts have different offsets.  Are you sure your new mounts are not 6 cylinder mounts?
By Deyomatic - 4 Years Ago
I know it's a dumb question, but you're positive that the engine/tranny are mated completely?
By paul2748 - 4 Years Ago
Compare the new mounts with the old ones (still have the old ones?).
By darrell - 4 Years Ago
put your old mounts on and see what you have.
By darrell - 4 Years Ago
you havent got 6 cyl mounts for sure as they set a v8 back not ahead.i got into this years ago putting 8 mounts on a 6 which set the 6 ahead.

I have the old mounts and they look identical to the new ones.  The trans is fully mounted, it was done before engine installation.

hi you have probably checked this already,, but have you done ANYTHING to the rear gearbox mount crossmember?? i assume the selectors do not mate up??just a thought good luck.

Exactly the same transmission? If it is a standard transmission, does the clutch "horseshoe" line up with the ball joint on the engine and the fulcrum on the frame? If so it would appear the engine is set properly.

You didn't respond to Deyomatic's question?.. This may be silly question?  Are you sure the Bell housing & trans are together properly?  If not, is it possible that your replacement engine was from an automatic car & your car is a standard. I believe that requires machining the end of the crank for a suitable pilot bushing setup ..

cranks are all the same

I’m going to suggest looking at the transmission mount more closely.  If it’s the old mount, then try flipping it around 180° as it may have an offset in the mounting holes.  If the transmission mount is new, then compare it to the old one if you still have it.

Thanks for all the replies and suggestion.  To answer your questions...

The transmission is a 5 speed Mustang, but it was on the old engine too.
Where the shift stub comes through the hole in the floor appears to be 1" forward also.
I am using the old bell housing.
The engine/transmission/bell housing are fully mated and torqued to spec.
The clutch linkage looks like the engine is forward in location. (not properly aligned)

if the mounts are the same then the motor is in the same place it was before.it cant be in a different place.the only way is the mounts are different.its impossiable to be forward 1 inch.the only way that could happen is the old mounts are 6 cyl

In your assortment of parts do you have a flat plate that you don't recognize?  When we put a late 5 speed in my son's early Mustang, we had to make an adapter plate for above the transmission mount so that the mount would bolt up with the engine sitting on the original front mounts.  If I remember correctly, it was a piece of 1/4" steel plate wide enough to accommodate the bolt holes in the transmission and long enough to bolt to the mount to match the holes in the mount.  A flat plate with 4 holes in it.

It all boils down to the engine mounts from what you have said (everything is forward from the z bar mounts to the rear emgine mount and the hole for the shifter)- so the mounts cannot be the same.  Check further on this.  Either the mounts are backwards, are the wrong mounts or badly manufactured. .  Do a closer examination of them - they may look the same but are they really the same?. Measuring them may tell the tale.

Do you still have the old mounts?
By Jack Groat - 4 Years Ago
PROBLEM SOLVED!!!  It was the motor mounts.  Getting one of the new ones out and comparing it to the old one, there is a 3/4" shift in the attaching studs/bolt holes.  Very unhappy with the people who supplied the reproduction.

Thanks guys....

Made of the finest chinesium, no doubt. Are the new ones a major brand (Moog, Anchor-Doan, etc.)?
By Jack Groat - 4 Years Ago
I don't know the brand.  They came in a clear plastic bag.  I called Concours Parts earlier and told them I was sending their mounts back, and there may be a few scratches but I want a full refund.  The conversation got maybe a little heated.  He said they had sold hundreds or possibly thousands of these same mounts and I am only customer to complain.  Well, my mother always told me I was "special".

Hmmm, I'm wary of parts of unknown provenance. I suspect they may be mislabeled 6 banger mounts. I've dealt with Concours off and on for years and never had an issue. Arguing with a customer doesn't promote a good image.
By darrell - 4 Years Ago
my guess is they sent you the right mounts.someone in the past put on a set of 6 cyl mounts.ive seen it done before sets your motor back about 3/4 inch.

I got mine from NAPA. Still available at a reasonable Price.

Jack, let us know when the mystery is solved; don't keep us in suspense.

All suppliers say the same thing - "never had a problem before" , "your the first one"   B.S.

I am glad you got it!
I remember getting annoyed at the place I got my disc brake kit on my old '60 F100 because the wheels wouldn't clear the new calipers and I had to grind a little of each caliper off to make them fit.  He said that I was the first one to complain- it didn't get heated, though.  Well, 5 months later I was looking at some old hubcaps I had and it dawned on me that the previous owner had wheels from a '48 on this '60.  Oooops.  Never mind.
