A lot of times when I take my 55' out driving I'll hear noise from the voltage regulator, it's actually a bit disconcerting because it's easy to miss that that's what it is especially on a nice summer day as it sounds like someone running a weed-eater off in the distance. Then you keep driving a few more blocks and then keep hearing it and you're like "wait." It seems like it usually stops eventually but it concerns me what it could be doing to the electrical system if perhaps those points are rusting together between trips or arcing.
I know I'm definitely preaching to the wrong crowd here. But I'm more likely to feel more comfortable if I could use a computer-controlled electronically modulated voltage regulator. Does anyone know if there exists any modern replacements to use on classic cars? Perhaps ones that look like the old original on the outside while modern internally?
