Ron, I’m in the market for a valley pan to modify. I can take it with the oil fill tube cut off, so shipping is cheap. That should get most of your money back for the whole deal.

I agree with Charlie - buy it. The rods and crank may as least be salvageable. It sure sounds like a '60 Mercury? If this is the case, it would be a 312. If I can remember, the 60 Mercury valve covers were kind of a light green as opposed to a darker green used in 57?

For $50, if you have room, get it, no matter what it is.  The block might be fine but even if it is not, the remaining parts are easily worth $50.00.  They aren't going to get easier to find.  Don't let them go to scrap if you can.

I went and looked at a junkyard Mercury Y Block today that had been sitting out in a pickup bed for a long time. Intake was gone as well as some spark plugs and water in the block. Rebuilt tag indicated mains were ground .010 and rods .020 with .040 overbore. Pretty sure the block is junk, but had a good valley and oil pan. The heads were COAE which makes me think it is a 1960, but the crank flange confused me. There was a very small raised dot on this crank flange and nothing like the eraser size raised dot on the 312 Ford cranks. So is there a difference between the Mercury and Ford 312 cranks with respect to the dot on the crank flange? If it's a 312 I'll go back and get it. He only wants $50.00 for it. Sorry, I don't have a photo to share.
