T56’s came in a lot of different ratios and input/output splines. So I’d guess there were different input shaft lengths. So the question would be what T56 behind a y block, and who makes the right adaptor, combination, etc.

How about zf gs6-53dz?
I dont know in your side off lake but here in northern Europe, that is one of most popular performance transmission.
Six speed, take abuse over 1000hp and costs hundreds.

What cars did those ZFs come in?

Bellhousing needs adapter or welding and gear ratios are better with long rear ends.

With Y-Block, problem is lack of aluminum bellhousings for weld installations.

Yeah...not plentiful at the local 'Pull-A-Part'. I see that Scrubettes also used a ZF 6 speed...high$.

i have used the y bellhousing (the 4speed crash box 1) first was to inst a 5speed  mustang box, 2nd 1 i have on my m47 with 292 had to surface the face to get pilot shaft far enough into the pilot  bearing then machine the front bearing retainer to fit bell housing. to get 4 bolts to the bell to trans had to drill and tap inside bell to trans. this requires when removing trans  1 must take bell with it. trans is a 4speed frome older grenada 4th being od worked well. i have a small lath so did the trans front cover my self. had to farm out the facing the y bell to have piolet bearing engage. clutch disk was used for the grenada with 10in y pressure plate.
not easy but doable
