Why would a 292 stock "pop" out a pushrod?  Had to fish it out of the valley.

Or, you need to shift sooner. Threw more than one from floating the valves.

Happened to me once too. No reason why, did not hurt anything either.

4 fl. oz ratio MMO per 10 gallons gasoline is good insurance against stuck lifters, valves, rings, etc. At least, that's the story. It certainly can't hurt anything.

How old was the gas in the tank when it last ran?

55charliebird (5/15/2018) It occurred while cranking.  I heard loud clink/snapping sound.  I think it was stuck valve.  Sprayed all springs with Marvel.  Seems OK.In your case, odds are in favor of the pushrod not being properly seated in the ‘divot’ in the top of the lifter; the pushrod simply fell off the top edge of the lifter when you attempted to start the engine.  A sticking valve will continue to give problems after this.  If you have 3 month or older fuel in the gas tank, then the potential is there for the intake valves to stick within their guides and especially when the guides are new.  Old fuel will allow the engine to start up but once it cools and a restart is attempted, the old fuel does leave a gummy residue (varnish) in the guides which will stick the valves when attempting to restart the engine.  I’ve seen all eight intake pushrods bend at the same time when this occurs but always happens after the first run in.
