I'm pretty sure i just lunched the one in my daily. I was running all over hell and back yesterday, tons of freeway driving and got a little howl going on my way home. I assumed there was something amiss but i didnt think too much until today it started making a real ruckus, started adding drag to the engine and had a pretty hard bang. I made it home and drained the rear and trans only to discover the trans almost dry. That explains why it has been marking it's spot!

So this is what i assume a stock 292 '59 ford transmission(not entirely sure though). It is a topload with a r10 unit on the back, so i guess it is a t86? Now i have a couple more overdrives that i was keeping as spares but they have the almost square side cover(isnt t85/6 d shaped?) so what does that make them? Will it fit with my column shift linkage?

What spline input/output count should i be i dealing with in the car? and is there anything that interchanges beween these two transmissions(shafts, ect)?

I'm pulling stuff after work tomorrow so i can get back on the road asap, like i said this is my daily.

Lastly what are the best sources for rebuild kits for these?

Also are the rebuild kits and syncro's for jeep t86's the same as a ford t86?

Van Pelts should have everything you want. The T85 has the D shaped cover on the side. The T86 is a top loader and does not have a side cover.

I have a great CD for sale in the classifieds that has quite a bit of BW overdrive information. You can also check with Y block magazine for back issues on the two articles I did, and you can go to www.hotrodreverend.com to see the blog posts on the overdrive R10 rebuild..

Well it's mostly apart, nothing looks too bad which is a good thing, but i still need to pop the overdrive cluster apart. Luckly i can probably raid overdrive parts off my ford transmissions. In the Overdrive it did have a pretty metalic shine to the oil so something is going bad. Also the oil has a bad burnt smell.

Also i was missing 1 bolt from the crossmember, 1 from the transmission to bellhousing and the other 3 were finger tight. Most of the tranmission case ones were finger tight too. Hopefully that is the reason this box leaks.

Do these tranmissions ever have issues leaking out the front countershaft holes like old muncies sometimes do? I'm figuring i'll silicone it where it bolts to the bellhousing just incase.

So how does the reverse gear come out? It has a key linking it to the countershaft which i removed, so it should the shaft should just slide out right?

Otherwise everything is out and apart, it sheared the shafts for the planetarys and knocked off all the teeth on the sun gear and welded everything to the main shaft... So i'm buying anouther main shaft, tail shaft and raiding one of the overdrives i have on a ford box for the gears and such

That shaft for reverse idler gear should come out pretty easily but you will have to tap the shaft a little ways to get it moving. Send me an email address and I will send you the two articles I did on the OD rebuild - they are word files with pictures. Another helpful soul on this sits is Dennis Leeking.
