I picked a Y block and 3 speed trans from a 62 - 64 F-100 in a junk yard and was wondering if both 272 & 292 used a balance tube or cross over between the ext. manifolds in the top frt. of the engine?  Or can I narrow it down before I get it on an engine stand and tear it down?  I always wanted to build a bucket with a Yblock.
Thanks Chuck

.Write down some casting #'s off the Heads and Block. John Mummert's  Site lists casting #'s and Application.

Here's the direct link to Mummert's site. Towards the bottom are the links to the block and head casting numbers. But the numbers don't tell that much, especially for the blocks. Heads are more defining. Either way, you're going to have to check everything during tear down. No telling what's been changed. Finding different heads (not just casting numbers, but valve and chamber size, or even rocker arm ratios) isn't unknown. Y blocks seem to run pretty good no matter how someone mixed up the parts.

If you're building a T bucket, get the front motor mount, and if possible the crossmember for reference. The trucks usually had mounts on the bell housing, and a center mount up front. The bell housing mount might be too wide in a T, we barely got it in my channeled 32. And we used a front mounted plate mount to the frame (like a flathead). Someone just had one on here, a Hurst I think.

Depending on how you do the motor and trans mount, you might be able to use the rams horns of the trucks with duals. Really cool on a T bucket.

Great project.

As a general rule, most pickups and trucks from 1954 thru 1964 with 239, 256, 272, & 292 V8’s originally came with the ‘forward and above the engine’ crossover pipe for the exhaust.  Exceptions would include Cab Overs and those applications that used the Rams Horn exhaust manifolds.

As mentioned above, the block casting number will get you close to identifying the original cubic inch displacement.  Assuming the engine came from a 62-64 pickup or truck, then look for a CITE or C2AE for the casting number.
