I have a 1955 Ford that I installed stock type power steering on. The pump and control valve have been rebuilt but acts like no power steering in either direction when running. The adj. nut is backed off 1/4 turn like it calls for, also has the 9" from ball stud to tie rod bolt. Pump appears to have plenty of pressure. Any ideas what I'm missing.

Is it possible the hoses could be reversed? That happened to a friend on a 55 scrub. Dave

No that was the first thing I thought of. Don't know if the power cylinder would leak by and cause this to happen. Been working on old hotrods for over 50 years, but this has me stumped.

Shot in the dark. The control valve is stuck, rebuilt or not. It needs to move to send pressure to the ram. I removed a pump once to have it rebuilt, and drove the car into town to the rebuilder. With no pressure on that valve, the car wanders all over, a lot of slack in the middle.

Might check that out, rebuilt everything about 2 years ago and just put it on. It acts like it did before I had power steering.

When you installed the power steering unit you did change the idler arm assembly also ? Carl

Yes, changed the idler arm ass. Pulled the control valve apart, cleaned it and put new seals in. Rebuilt according to the 55 manual. All ports are clean. The power cylinder is working alright. Still no power steering. Wonder if I back the nut off more than the 1/4 turn if that might work. Acts like the valve spool is not moving, it slides back and forth easy putting it to gather. Have had 2 56 Fords and 1 55 Ford with power steering years ago and seemed to work great.

Anyone know of some one that rebuilds these control valves. Think something was put together wrong.

Is the power steering pump working? A lot of replies concerning the control valve but you won't have power assist unless the pump supplies pressure.

Have not put a gauge on it, but didn't get the line tight enough and blew oil over the floor. With the power cylinder loose it did not go out or in until the steering was bottomed out in each direction.It acts like the spool is not moving enough until there is more pressure put on it. Don't know if the stop screw on the back side has any adjustment or not. Thanks for all the help this is turning into a stumper.
