I considering acquiring a '56 lincoln 317 long block. Wondering what things like intake, valve covers, timing covers etc. are interchangeable?

None of the stuff you mention will interchange with the Ford/Merc Y-block. The 317 is physically larger and the intake runners are laid out side by side instead of stacked. The TC is also different. It will not mate up to a Ford/Merc bellhousing except for one from a heavy truck.

I got your pm, but the question is mostly answered here.

I think the distributor will but you might have to swap the gear.  The oil pump will.  The rocker shaft stands.  Maybe the fuel pump.
