I don't know if you want to spend this much but I got a flyer from joblot auto(joblotauto.com) in NY and they have brand new(no core required)flathead starters in 6 and 12 volt for $169.00 plus shipping. They also have front control arm kits which do upper and lower arms complete with shafts, all bushings, and lower bolts for $115.00 for 54-56 Ford cars and 55-57 Tbird if anyone is looking for these items.Regards Mark

Dutchy:

I just compared the two, the case lengths are the same, but the Y starter is about 3/4" longer from the back end of the case to the tip of the shaft.  The flathead armature may fit in the Y case though.

Gents,

Isn't the Yblock starter just a flathead starter with a alloy 3 bolt adapter attached by the two original flathead mounting bolts?  is what I was led to believe.

Davis:

The Y starter mounts with three bolts in the flange at the drive end of the starter.  If I remember correctly, flathead starters mount with two bolts through the starter itself.  The 6 volt wtarter will work on 12 volts, it actually has bigger windings in it that the 12 volt one has.

also wanted to know if the Y block starter would interchange with late model flathead.

if i'm converting to 12V, might as well do it all.

thanks!
