Ebay Item # 351737080403. The Seller says it measures 66.5 Inches which is shorter than the One supplied by Macs etc. Using One for the Standard Transmission will work. Just a bigger Loop in the Cable under the Car.

If you decide to get another cable, be sure its for a 49-56. After 56 the trans end of the cable is different and will not work with your trans. No sense not to use the standard cable.

That's great info and should solve problem, does anyone have a method of retrieving the gear that is inside housing, I have not been able to locate it by sticking finger in, I`m open to ideas as I don`t think I`m the only one that ever had this happen.

According to my Master Parts Catalog the Cable You need is 63" long. The Ends are all the same from 49-56 if You find One near that Length for any of these Applications. There's one on Ebay that's 66" long that would likely work for Your's.

Yes, Mac`s catalog shows cable is for standard or overdrive trans. I think you are right that the only difference for automatics is the length. The gear sure falls off easy when removing so you must be really careful or find a way to secure it to end of cable.

The difference is the Length. Fordomatic is shorter than the One used with standard Transmission. 49-56 Uses the same cable. Macs and others only seem to have the longer One for Standard Transmission. If you check around Ebay etc you may find one closer to the Length You want. As Paul mentions the Gear just sits on the cable until it is installed. You might try a little glue or maybe a little grease where the Cable goes into the Gear. to hold it in place.

You can get new gears. Try Mac's or Carpenter. Try a 20 tooth gear to start. You might try ebay. You need a gear that covers 54 to 56, maybe earlier. .I Checked both Mac's and Carpenter. Both have the gears. Carpenter the cheapest. You have to be careful when putting the cable in the trans as nothing holds the gear until it gets all the way in.. I don't have any suggestions on how to get it out.
As far as the cable is concerned, Carpenter only shows one - I assume for both auto and standard. Call them and make sure.

My parts catalog does not show a new speedo cable for 54 Ford c/w 239 y-block and ford-o-matic trans. Is this cable different than the ones used for standard transmissions? My standard trans cable fits ok but gear fell off end of cable and is in housing somewhere. Anyone have the answer to this?.. Thanks, Whipper Bill
