Gary,    will do...     thanks again for your help ...      I pulled the engine yesterday to get the trans rebuilt...   It was rebuilt a few months ago and one of the graphite seals let go

Make sure the square corner of the gasket is located front and top on each side of the engine.

If there are none at all, then the gasket has been made incorrectly.  The gasket should look like this, from ford-y-block.com.  You can see that one is large, one is small and the others are totally blocked.

I was installing the heads on my 57 312 (Tbird ) and notice that the four outer water ports on the head and block don't have openings on the head gasket ..   Is this correct ???
