The 54 like the 55 Ford had a air cooled Ford -0-matic , if it's working OK leave well enough alone, if the trans needs rebuilding (Other than seals) go for 57 up Ford-0-matic or a C4.

Tough call. The cost of a rebuild on the Fordo is probably about 600 bucks. You can look up the cost of the C4 kit. For the money to buy and install the kit and C4 you get a better , more modern trans, that any shop can fix, is lighter, may give you better mileage and is a true operating three speed from take off.

Without knowing much more about your car, what you plan to do with it and your ability to do your own mechanical work it is not possible to give you any useful advice. I do know the FOM is very strong and VERY HEAVY ( 150 + LBS ) . It will cost at least $ 1500 to convert to a C4 and only you can tell if it will be worth it. If the FOM is working now and only leaking, just drive it for a while till you see how much time and money the car is worth. Pete

Hi, a Cruise-O-Matic ( or FMX ) fits the car, gets you a modern transmission and costs a lot less, however it weighs about 60 lbs more.
