Hey guys, here are a few pics of my Dad's (yehaabill) turbo 292 Pickup. We have been working off and on it for a couple of weeks now. For now, the setup is as follows: Stock 30K mile long block Isky Cam High ratio rockers Red's Headers Holley 600 Garrett TO4-B 60-1 turbo Custom piping by Dad and I We used his "new" engine to mock up most of it in the shop I fabbed up a "Y" pipe off the Red's headers Detail shot

We are running the turbo setup as a "draw through"...in other words the turbocharger will draw fuel out of the carb, compress it and blow the fuel mixture into the intake manifold The carb adapter was fabbed out of some 12 ga. aluminum sheet and 1" 6061 aluminum was used for the mounting base Here is a shot of Pops in action! Another engine shot Now for the turbocharger. I have been messing around with turbos since 1993 or so...I began with the venerable 9535-1 "60-1" TO4-E compressor wheel. I wanted to keep the older feel under the hood of the '60, so I decided to put together a TO4-B series turbo from RotoMaster...so a little machine work was in order! Getting the wheel set up After machining, the wheel must be re balanced...this is a pic of the whole assembly being balanced Here are all the parts before assembly

The 60-1 compressor wheel was not around when RotoMaster was building turbos, so a little machine work...and the wheel fits perfectly! I chose a "P-Trim" turbine wheel... The center housing rotating assembly or "CHRA" as it is referred to in turbo terms "On center" exhaust housing...circa 1965 or so! Complete

We have driven the truck a couple of hundred miles so far...and I have a few bugs to work out. The biggest of which is a dead spot right around the 10" of vacuum and really light throttle. I have a wide-band O2 sensor that I am going to use to check the Air/Fuel ratio at that throttle opening. The dynamics of pulling the air and fuel from the carb base into the turbo inlet does mess around with the mixture a little. I suspect that the plenum under the carb along with the 3" pipe entering the turbo might be hurting me a little, but we will see. On the current engine, we are only running about 6 psi of boost. Pops has a Crane ignition with Boost retard that we have not put in yet...but after that goes in, I will post up some performance evaluations! Thanks for looking! --reed

Damn, I was hoping I'd be the first to put a turbo on a truck. That looks great! So thats a pull through, rather than a blow through, right? Can't wait to hear about the performance!

I'm jealous of your machine shop... all I have is a 50 yr old Craftsman lathe and a drill press!My little lathe is a Montgomery Ward...some people tell me that it is twice as old as I am ...I love old machine shop equipment, shure beats the heck out of the chiwaneese stuff they sell now a days! That little guy has made more cool stuff for us than I could ever talk about...and it is small enough to fit in a corner! -reed

Nice to see that turbo set ups are becoming more popular there too . Who will be next? Any thoughts adding an intercooler to your PU? Can you put some videos visible somewhere? Can't wait to hear that thing whistle...
