Actually it was all the way out/back. I was able to turn the collar with my hands, and simply pushed the steering wheel in about 3 inches, and it fits me much better. Thanks for the tips, I will probably be asking more questions all along. My first car that I actually owned/drove was a '56 Fairlane Victoria 2 door hard top, blue and white with 292. I rebuilt the top end of the engine in 1962/3, and I dated my future wife in college while driving that Fairlane. I have been looking for another one ever since. We bought our first car together in 1966, a red mustang 289, and have had Fords ever since. Still married to the college sweetheart, 48 years later! Joe-JDC

Chances are, it's probably all the way in. If you can't see a gap between the collar and the rest of the column on the wheel side, it's in. The wheel is close to the seat by modern standards. I took the stops off the seat back so it reclines a little more giving me some room.

I would soak the collar with penetrating oil for a day or two if it will not loosen. Oil filter wrench may be useful also to loosen the collar.

There's a knurled piece on the column. Left to loosen, and the wheel should move either in or out. There's not a lot of travel. If it hasn't been moved in years it could be stuck. Don't break the steering wheel, it's worth a fortune. The actual slip joint is inside the column and just out of the steering box, under the hood.

I have been looking for an old Y-block car, and have not had much luck until yesterday. I had a '55 T-bird offered at a price I could not refuse, so it is in my garage. However, it has the steering wheel back a little too far for my tastes and height. The previous owner, a widow lady, said it was adjustable, but did not know how to show me. Can any of you point me in the right direction, or give a quick answer? I thought I would check here before going Google. Thanks in advance. Joe-JDC
