I am thinking a 223 or 262 six would be the best motor to put in my 37 Chevy p/u so I need some measurements,I need the measurement from the water pump pulley where the fan bolts on to the back of the head. Its almost 32 inches on my 235 and do not know when I can get to the old junkyard to do some measuring and would appriciate it if someone can get me that measurement,I could also use the measurement from the center of the balancer to the center of the water pump shaft so I can see where the fan will be compared to my motor.

I have a rebuilt 223, never run cuz I went a different way, on a stand in the shop... can measure tonite if nobody replies this afternoon. Cheers... Brian

I have found out on the HAMB that its about the same length as a 235 so if I can find one that runs good I might drop one in,years ago I seen in a early 60s ford truck a 235 under the hood and the owner said it bolted in so I think I can do this in reverse. Since I have time might see if I can find a 262.

I have a few 223's the early ones have the 2 studs through the valve cover, then in 59 (I think) they went to bolting around the perimeter of the valve cover and went to what they called the silent lash rockers. All run good if you need one!

I think I would stick with the 223, I have done a little research and it seems that parts are still out there for the 223 but not much for the 262. If you are looking for the most bang for the buck, then go with a 240 or 300. There is good support for them and they will bolt up to a modern trans.

Looks like you might be going a different way, but I measured for you anyway... Water pump fan flange face to rear of head is 32"; Crank snout c/l to water pump shaft c/l is 7.5"; and for grins I measured crank c/l at pilot bearing to top of truck style bellhousing (for firewall clearance consideration) at 10". Good luck... Brian

the 262 is just a long stroke 223, used in ford medium duty trucks. they also made a 242 diesel in ford 6000 tractors along with the 223 gas.

Just thought I'd throw out what I've been thinking of for a while now. I need to find a decent '53 or '54 Ford Business coupe to use a 223 based engine that is bouncing around in my head (combo will net close to 300ci) run it in XO/PRO class on a record of 135 and change. Record is held by a Ford now but I think I could do better.

Heres an 11 second Falcon with a 6 I saw run at the Cacklefest at New Englad dragway, I think he was in the 120's MPH. Talk about a sound!
