John, the 2 parts cars I had, once you removed the A/C grills looked like something chewed on the dash.

Lou,

I am unsure if "some" were sent in the trunks of the cars they were destined to be installed in.

I do know that the heater core, plenum box, dash holes cut next to speakers etc>> would be a mass undertaking once the dash, windshield, trim etc was on /in the cars.

Stranger things have taken place in automobile history, but a dealer installation, "after the fact of factory line build" would have required a lot of evasive work and damage to a brand new car.

The price on the "very" rare factory indash system is now $1500.

Regards,

John

Yes the A/C set up was on the order sheet, but it came to the dealer in a box(s) in the trunk, with instruckions how to install it, at least that the way it was sent out of the Somerville, MA and the Chicago assembly plant. Maybe in the larger assembly plants, Wahwah, Dearborn, Dallas, etc. it was added on the assembly lines.

Lou,

A/C was available on the order sheet from the factory on 55 & 56 Fords.

All in dash, factory Selectair.

Yes, >> there were underdash units which were dlr installed, have one here for $100. if anyone wants one.

The system I posted here for sale, is a rare indash factory installed unit.

Warm regards,

john

A/C on 55 and 56 Fords was dealer installed, it wasn't untill 1957 that it became a factory installed option.

Looking at these 55 dash boards reminds me of the 55 Ford Customline tudor my father bought new. One option I talked him in to buying was the deluxe radio, The deluxe radio has 2 more tubes, 8 instead of 6 I think, and the deluxe radio had chrome metal push buttons, instead of black plastic. I never saw one with factory A/C.

Carl, Ted has a pair of the vents for this 55 . We just hauled the wagon with the air dash out of Ted's and brought it back to Illinois to be restored. Tom
Tom I parted out a 55 wagon a few years ago and still have some parts left,if you need anything when you restore your 55 let me know i might have what you need Carl

Factory air was not uncommon on ’55 Fords as I’ve had several that were so equipped over the years. And it was not necessarily just the top end models for that option as the first one I had was a Customline. I’ve found that air conditioning was much more prevalent on the Texas built cars.

As Tom mentions, I did keep the pair of A/C dash vents from the ’55 Wagon that left here in March. In the event I don’t find a nicer set, I have this pair to work with. I did throw in a stock dash for the wagon so the new owners would not have to contend with the holes in the dash as they resurrect this one back to life. This particular wagon was a top end model as it had been originally equipped with the 182HP Special V8, factory air, power steering, power brakes, and power seats. No power windows though on this one. Here’s a picture of the dash before removing the vents.
