I am going to go look at a motor with fordomatic trans tomorrow that is out of the car and it is supposed to be a 312 and wanted to know if the crank flange marking can be seen if I take the starter off. I really dont want to drop the pan.

I do not think you can see the flange with the starter off, maybe with a light and inspection mirror and removing the bellhousing inspection plate you may be able the see the crank flange?

NOPE DONT THINK SO.. Most would say you are better taking the pan off than dealing with a starter motor...

If the engine is out of chassis, ?, it might be easiest to pull the transmission back. But, if the shallow 5/16" dia dot isn't there, you could still be looking at a 312 crank or not. You may find other markings indicating a 272-292 crank. You might have to remove the pan to check.
Many advertised 312s, aren't!

Pulling the pan is by far the best way to identify a 312 ( ECZ ) main caps, and Front counter weights positioned the same.

What are the block numbers/letters I have never seen an ECZ block that wasnt 312, if its one of the others then its pulling the pan.

Y Block Billy, those ECZ numbers on the side of the block can be 292s as well.

Billy. As Gary brings up, ECZ 292 blocks are floating around but they are getting harder to come by. Without doing any checking of the ones I have, I’ll say that most are from the 1957 production year.

Here are a couple of links to past threads giving additional information on turning the engine over in relation to the TDC mark on the damper so that the recessed pad on the crankshaft flange is visible from the bottom of the engine.

It is a ECZ-A block. The guy had receipts for the motor overhaul showing 312 piston part numbers so I went for it. I am just going to use this untill I get the final motor built but it will be easier to resell if it is a 312.
