I had my VIN decoded by lovefords.org today and this is what I got:

M6PT111631   70C   HE  L  18K 9556H
M = 292 cubic inch V-8 engine
6 = 1956
P = St Paul, Minnesota assembly plant
T = Ford Fairlane sedan product code
111631 = the 11,631st Ford scheduled for production at St Paul for the 1956 model year. The first was 100001

70C = Ford Fairlane Club Sedan body style code
HE = Platium Gray (H) and Colonial White (E)
L = gray cloth interior
18K = scheduled for production on October 18, 1955
9556H = order number

Problem is, this is the car that was decoded:

Hardly a Fairlane!  The VIN tag was on the body, inside the front door facing out.  There isn't any apparent or significant body damage on the car.  Does anyone have any theories on why a Fairlane VIN tag is on my Parklane?  The loveford guy told me that the vin may also be stamped on the frame, but location varies with each manufacturing plant.  Any ideas where to look for a second VIN on this car?  Thanks, Mike

My 56 town sedan is on the right front of the frame rail about 4 or 6 inches back from the front. Couldnt see it till i sandblasted the frame.

Someone may have had the car and no title, so they obtained a title and body tag, put it on the car, and retitled it.  I did that on my Studebaker, but I did find one that matched the body style of my car.  If you find the frame number it will verify whether or not the tag is the correct one.  The frame number will only have the  six digit serial number, will not have the other numbers/letters.

Fairlanes had the higher cost trim such as the lightning chrome strip going down the side and the parklane had that trim. Country and ranch wagons didn't. Fairlane is fancier trim from what I've gathered. I owned and sold my brother a 1956 ford fairlane convertible thus the fancy lightning strip with a factory 6 cylinder engine which came in mostly customs.

Someone has replaced the data tag with one from a Club Sedan.Not unheard of on 50-60 year-old cars.

Look on the pass. side top of frame just under the heater blower motor, but like John said it will just be a serial number, and not match your data tag or title number. If you look in the Crown victoria Assoc. There is a guy who restamps I.D. tags and maybe he could help you. Tom
