A year and a half ago I was looking through craig's list and found a '55 Fairlane Club Sedan with a fairly clean looking 292 on the side ready to install. I told my wife about it and suggested that I should take a look at it. She said "You should you need something to do". Well she may as well have signed the check!
When I show her all the advice that Ted and the other geniuses on this site offer up she figures that my attempts to comprehend it will stave off dementia. Mark

No problem here, the wife is a closet motor head, she can find rust in a field 500 yards away and loves traipsing thru junk yards. I show her what I want at swap meets and she'll spend the day looking, I've got a feeling someday she's gonna want a doozy in return, but so far, so good. Gary

I've had the same pit boss for 49 years. She thinks cars are for transportation only. Does not like any form of racing and will not attend any events with me. BUT we have learned to respect each others space, likes and dislikes. Occasionaly I have to remind her how much we have saved over the years by me doing our vehicle maintenance and repairs. Works for us! Chuck

In my case, it helps we're both retired. Gives you so much time together after a life of both of us working, she's glad to get me out from underfoot for a while. Like mentioned above, a movie (especially a chick flick), buys me a long leash. Just have to learn to sleep sitting up without snoring.

X2 on what Tim said about "Old Lady", but when we met I had a toy car, a 1961 Austin Healey 3000, which she enjoyed, but I made it clear there would always be an extra car or so around the house. I always have time for other interests and put keeping the house together first. Car finances are separate from household finances, though sometimes when a car goes there's extra cash for something for her, usually jewelry.
Mostly though, she knows it makes me happy and when the car is drivable, (seems like there's always something else I want to do) we do things with it she enjoys. While she wasn't crazy about the Thunderbird when I first decided on one, she enjoys socializing with the local club, and I think there's a little pride that this happened in our garage, not just something we paid for.

I try to balance the time between them. For each day in the garage, I spend a day out running around, or going to see a movie... My car isn't getting put together quite as fast as I'd like, but I still have someone to come in hangout with when I close the garage door. Like Tim said, I support all of her hobbies as much as possible and in return, she supports mine. However, sometimes if I'm in the garage late, I have to remind her how much fun it will be to go to the weekly crusie-in a burger and beer, or to just go for a drive to the mountain in the summer once that old Y is fired up for the first time and running sound . I'm pretty lucky though, she doesn't even mind that I gave my car another girl's name!

My attitude also. Solitary confinement might seem bad, but only until you end up with the wrong cellmate!
