Hi Richard, I have been schooled to believe (by this Forum) that the Borg Warner T-86 transmission has a sheet metal top-mounted-cover which provides access for installing and removing gears, etc. Too, the shift levers come through the side of the transmission case casting and are not part of a removable cover on a T-86 I'm not sure what you've got from your picture. I wish I could be more help.

To use it in a '57 the driveshaft yoke will have to be changed. Ford went to a fine spline in '57. The '56 and earlier yoke will require a hybrid U joint to make the connection.

EJ: This is a light duty trans. A C6 yoke won't fit.

And it ain't a light duty... It's a T-89. I made one good one out of 2 that I got at Moultrie swap meet...It has a 31 spline tail shaft & I got a new C-6 yolk & it slides right on. Perfect....

T86, straight bottom side cover is the light duty trans. T85, curved bottom side cover it the heavy duty one. Came out in the 312 cars in 1956 and as I recall was available in the '62-'63 406 Galaxies.
