What hp can I expect by putting a 56 Merc. 312 crank, rod and pistons in a 1959 292 Ford block with 113 heads, duel exhaust and 500 cfm holly. Should I use the cam out of the 312 Merc. or get a new cam? looking to pep up my 1957 Fairlane Convert. that now has a 292 two barrel. I am working on a low budget at this time.

Cams in my humble opinion in 1956 were simply too small for the 312s. Going to a 224 @ .050 with a running duration of 270 should wake the 312 up and actually may improve gas miliage add more torque and HP and still run an automatic with the factory stall converter. Clean up alittle under the valve area in the heads and that will add even more performance and not cost alot of money.BigGrin

Based on budgetary constrants:

1 Be sure everything you reuse is A1 shape such as rocker arms and shafts, valve stems and seats etc.  It need not be new but is should be within the wear limits in the shop manual.  Get a shop manual and talk with machine shop operators to be sure they know about Yblocks specifically. This is IMPORTANT.

2 Talk to a local cam grinder, for instance Berry Cams in Minnisota or Clay Smith now located in Maryland. Describe your application to them and get a co ordinated reground cam kit from them. Be sure they supply compatable lifters and slightly better valve springs. You don't mention your trany but guessing a Fordo that will not be changed you are somewhat limited in cam selection but there is help there.  Don't go too wild.

3 Replace the solid 1/4" pushrods with tubular ones.

4 Port the iron intake manifold as discussed here several times, you should be able to find a thread about how to do it.

5 Get the 57 distributor recurved to give about 30deg centrifugal advance set static timing set the static timing at about 10 deg. Get new distributor wires.  Most people are now using an electronic trigger like a pertronix.

6 Compression is already low in these engines and the replacement head gaskets are thicker than the steel shim variety the engines came with.  Head milling removing about .040" is helpful and with the new head gaskets should not require machining the intake surfaces. Mill more if you can afford it.

7 Use the '57 ex manifolds and be sure you have high flow mufflers, ie not Cherry Bombs etc which actually restrict flow worse than stock.

HP might be in the range of 240 to 270 Torque maybe up to 300 ftlb, RPM up to 5500 no sweat.

Doug prety well has it covered. Might look at a cam and lifters from John Mummert or an Isky E2 or something similar. Stock '57 312 was rated at 245 horses. You should be able to do better with a better cam.

The Isky E-2 was a popular track cam in the 50s & 60s. However, if the engine has a Fordomatic attached, forget about that cam. Mummert recommends his 265 S or equivalent for that situation due, to the Fordo's converter

Keep in mind that the 292 pistons will not work with 312 crank and rods.

The skirts are longer and will hit the counterweights at the bottom of the stroke.

If the 312 pistons are in good shape you can bore the 292 block to fit them.

I like the Y265S cam over the E4, although I sell both. E2 is no longer available from Isky.
