I doubt I'll ever buy another GM vehicle. I have driven SAABs since 1983. GM killed the vehicle when they bought into SAAB and killed them again when they would not agree to sell SAAB for fear of having to give up intellectual property rights. China-Youngman was a bidder for SAAB but no agreement was reached. Now GM is putting research and development directly in China, what is really going on? Thanks for the link. Reminds me of a Shark Tank episode (the last one I ever watched) where a hometown fella in the midwest or someplace similar had come up with a good product for trucks. He had done well, but wanted to build a manufacturing plant in his hometown to provide about 100-150 jobs. The "sharks" - appropriate term here - kept telling him they wouldn't support his idea unless he outsourced to China. The fella started tearing up a little bit and got choked up so he couldn't answer them with a good rebuttal, but he's not a businessman, just an up and coming hometown hero that wanted to put some jobs in the hands of people who need them - US citizens.

Thanks GM for showing your corporate colors. They "ain't" Red, White, and Blue.

Unions? ok, there are some problems, no doubt.

Bailouts? another big problem with catch 22's all over the place...

but selling out to the communists? Where is John Birch when you need him? If you all do not know about the WWII anti-communist hero John Birch, google him.... he probably drove a FORD too, lol.

I certainly am no GM fan and would never own a GM vehicle (or Chrysler either), but lets not kid ourselves - Both Ford and Chrysler probably have as much in China as GM.

I have a little bit of a different take based just on the video.  Obviously more research would be needed to come up with an informed opinion.  It sounds to me like the Chinese government was going to make a deal with some car manufacturer to produce vehicles in China.  I am pretty sure that every major car company in the world was trying to get this business. Whichever company won this bid was going to have to manufacturer these vehicles in China as part of the deal.  If GM or any other American based car manufacturer is able to win this business and make money selling the Chinese people cars manufactured in China I don't have an issue with it.  Now, if they start to outsource jobs from the US to China for cars to be sold in American or start to ship cars from China to the US to sell then I have an issue.

That is another bit of depressing news even if I'm not a Chevy fan.  All we apparently can do is stay informed, and read labels.  It is even hard to find canned mushrooms that arent Chinese. 

I saw a new electronic distributor for SBF for $44.  Guess where that was made.  Also bought for curiosity a new 350 cfm 2bbl carb, less float bowl, for 19.00.  It has to be seen to be believed (Chinese dont know where to drill and not drill holes).

Here in Australia, we are waiting for Australia's own car, the Holden (GMH), to be built in China.

For years we have paid a premium for their cars to protect the Australian car industry, but it is only a matter of time for the hammer to fall. We have been flooded with Hyundais, Kia's and those awful Dawoos out of Korea, so have come to accept mediocrity as the norm.

Can you imagine a modern car lasting 50 years. You can't get parts for the when they are five years old.

Who knows what the answer is.

Had to laugh about the insinuation re: butt-kissing an anti-democratic government to get business, as if there was ever any such thing as corporate morality (just ask Ralph Nader), or patriotism (I remember the evidence concerning Henry Ford being in bed with the nazis during the war wasn't ever adequately explained away).



My experience with chinese products has been mixed. They make some of the worst crap (especially steel), and yet my electric bicycle conversion kit is very reliable, and was a great value. Worst part of it was the U.S.-made lithium battery. Ended up buying a replacement battery from a small chinese supplier (for less money) that has 4 times the range.

It seems to be a propaganda video designed to fuel a fire rather than to solve anything which is based mostly on the fact that GM took bailout money and "now" produce vehicles in China, as though it was not already known. Not to put a halo over their head but the way we're in bed with China, pick a car company or virtually any large company for that matter, guess what, they have dealings in China.
