Ford has been down sizing for years. Lots of people in the Detroit area were forced to look elswhere for job. BUT that started a long time ago when jobs were available in the area. They had seen the hadwriting on the wall. As a result they were much better prepared for the crash.

GM and Chrysler made them out to be the "bad guys" throughout this period. They lived on in pork bliss until it was too late. We have been bailing out GM and Chrysler for many many years. Check out the federal contracts they both received for military vehicles when they were neither the low bidder or provided a vehicle with all of the contract requirements. Chuck

As I understand it, Ford attended the initial meetings with the U.S. Feds, however they did "not" take a bailout. They downsized or sold off their losing outside opertions such as Jaguar & borrowed money in the market. They also hired outside the family to head up the company.

My friend and body man has an auto body shop, he recently had a crashed mid size chevy in the shop. It was a 2012, and was full of Chinese parts. The replacement parts were also difficult to access. When I told him about this story he says Ford took a bailout too. That's news to me.

Canada already imports G.M. cars made overseas. But, what is most troubling is that G.M and others businesses & governments, kiss the hand of China, in the full knowledge that their government is a Communist dictatorship. So, there is no democracy, no unions and no way for China's ordinary working class to rise to what we would call a middle class standard of living, which would tend to balance out overall costs and prices, which in the long run would benefit all of us. In the meantime, both in Canada & the U.S.A., our resourses & jobs leave the country. It's definately a troubling situation...

I have read articles concerning this topic in the past since this isn't something that just happened. Old news. All Auto manufacturers make cars in different countries.



From what I have read what is different is that GM has a contract with China. GM builds cars in China to be sold in China since China does not allow the import of foreign cars (to China). Very few are to be sold outside of China. Has nothing to do with losing jobs or selling Chinese Chevies in the USA.



But what concerns me is what happens in the future. It is anyones guess what will happen after we supply the technology, machinery and knowhow to build cars and then kick GM to the curb. After all they are dealing with a Communist Government.



Look what happened after our Oil Companies showed the Middle Eastern Countries how to get their oil out of the ground.

It seems to be a propaganda video designed to fuel a fire rather than to solve anything which is based mostly on the fact that GM took bailout money and "now" produce vehicles in China, as though it was not already known. Not to put a halo over their head but the way we're in bed with China, pick a car company or virtually any large company for that matter, guess what, they have dealings in China.

Had to laugh about the insinuation re: butt-kissing an anti-democratic government to get business, as if there was ever any such thing as corporate morality (just ask Ralph Nader), or patriotism (I remember the evidence concerning Henry Ford being in bed with the nazis during the war wasn't ever adequately explained away).



My experience with chinese products has been mixed. They make some of the worst crap (especially steel), and yet my electric bicycle conversion kit is very reliable, and was a great value. Worst part of it was the U.S.-made lithium battery. Ended up buying a replacement battery from a small chinese supplier (for less money) that has 4 times the range.

Here in Australia, we are waiting for Australia's own car, the Holden (GMH), to be built in China.

For years we have paid a premium for their cars to protect the Australian car industry, but it is only a matter of time for the hammer to fall. We have been flooded with Hyundais, Kia's and those awful Dawoos out of Korea, so have come to accept mediocrity as the norm.

Can you imagine a modern car lasting 50 years. You can't get parts for the when they are five years old.

Who knows what the answer is.

That is another bit of depressing news even if I'm not a Chevy fan.  All we apparently can do is stay informed, and read labels.  It is even hard to find canned mushrooms that arent Chinese. 

I saw a new electronic distributor for SBF for $44.  Guess where that was made.  Also bought for curiosity a new 350 cfm 2bbl carb, less float bowl, for 19.00.  It has to be seen to be believed (Chinese dont know where to drill and not drill holes).
