junkyardjeff (11/6/2011) It looks like I will be looking under the hoods of every 61 to 64 truck I see,I would have checked the one in the local yard yesterday but had too much work to do. That yard has a bunch of old state and military base vehicles so if the one I know about is not a 262 then there might be one in there somewhere,I thought about going with a 300 but I want a old looking motor and that series of motor will confuse a bunch of people.To the best info I can get the 262 was a one year only in the light duty trucks, 1964. The local town garbage truck had a 262 engine in a 64 F350 Ford.I don't know if they were available in the medium duty models (F500's) These engines has a cast crank instead of the steel crank like the HD trucks did.In 65 the 240 sixes came out and previous to 64 the only six in the early 60's light duty trucks was the 223 engine. I did a little googling this morning and found this site. Read down to their moderator's comments are. In Canada the 262 was available as an option engine in the M-100 1/2 ton Mercury trucks. We sold 2 of them when I was pulling wrenches back then.
In the light duty trucks the crankshafts were cast vs steel as the HD trucks had. Steel cranks came out later years.
Easiest way to tell a 262 is the fuel pump mounts on the timing cover whereas the 223 is on the side of the block and the 262 had dual belts instead of a single to the water pump and generator. The 262 block also has a very heavy support rib lengthwise just above the oil pan.

YA, I don't mean to dispute you, but I have had a 262 in a 64 F250, it was an old state hwy dept truck.

hi jeff, to narrow it down they only offered it in f-600, b-600, c-550, and c-600's, from 61-64. look for the tall valve cover. they were 3.7187 bore and 4.031 stroke. you could use 292 or mabey 312 pistons. they show engine code ( B ) as the 4th didgit in the ser. number.

The 262 could be had in a 3/4 ton pickup in the early 60's. The ones that I have seen have a different valve cover than the 223, it has a bit of a hump in it.

The Heavy Duty 6 was 262 cu in. I believe they have a steel crank and do have different rods than the earlier EBP engines. Casting number on the block should be C1TE6015. The easiest way to identify will be to remove the valve cover and look at the exhaust valve stems and spring retainers. The stems will be 7/16" while the intakes are 11/32". The exhaust retainers will have weird flat keepers to allow the valve to rotate. Either the distributor or the carburetor might have a governor.

Ford had a 300 cu. in. 6-cylinder in the truck line in the 1960s.

Not sure, but you sure do want to piss off the Chevy guys. Had a friend back in the mid '70's that raced a '55 Chevy with a 289 Ford in it just to hack them off. Should have used a 312!
